A Seoul Summer for Gucci

We’ve seen it everywhere, oversized blazers, big belts, impractical layers, and statement accessories. Seoul has been an up-and-coming fashion capital for years, well known for its unique street style, taking inspiration from cultures across the world. Each of the major fashion weeks brings its own personality to the coming trends. Home of Haute-Couture, Paris fashion brands are known for their modern takes on classic fashion, take, Pharell Williams's debut collection with Louis Vuitton on June 20th, featuring classic Louis Vuitton monograms in unique colorways and styles.

Gucci presented their 2024 Resort collection on May 16th in Seoul in an iconic runway show at Gyeongbokgung Palace, a royal palace built in 1935. The building shined in a brilliant light show as models walked the catwalk surrounding the magnificent building. The guestlist of around 600 featured iconic faces in fashion from all over the world including Xenia Adonts a fashion influencer from Hamburg, German, and Kim Hye-Soo a Korean Actress, all styled elegantly by Gucci. 

The collection featured exaggerated design elements like large contrasting bows, zippers, and prints, as well as oversized versions of classic Gucci handbag styles. Looks accessorized with surfboards, skateboards, and goggle-like glasses gave the collection an essence of adventure. Many types featured silhouettes and materials similar to those of a wetsuit worn for surfing, further emphasizing the resort collections' sporty nature. 

Pops of color from royal purples to bright reds are splashed throughout the collection, and classic Gucci prints such as their monogram are found throughout, creating a balance between solid and pattern. Emerging trends like statement sleeves and chrome fabrics also made appearances throughout the collection.

Sabato De Sarno, Gucci’s new Creative Director, appointed in February, had little hand in the creation of this collection due to his recent appointment. This collection was designed by the brand's design team.

Gucci’s collection not only made its debut in South Korea, but the brand also worked hand in hand with Korean artists to create pieces. Ram Han https://ram-han.com, a digital artist based in Seoul designed a variety of graphics printed on Gucci’s resort pieces. Well known for her whimsical style, and for creating album covers for some of Korea’s most popular artists, her collaboration with Gucci represents the intertwining of two cultures, Italian, and Korean.

The Italian brand is known for its international appeal, its latest resort collection takes that to a new level. There is a huge market for luxury products and apparel in Korea, and choosing this location was a strategic step for Gucci. This collaboration with help strengthen the brand’s identity in Korea, widening its customer base, and further integrating the brand into Korean street style.
