Best Cut-Out Dresses for the Summer 2022 Season
An exposed side or open back, cut-out dresses have been the new trend for the past few seasons, and they’re the new closet staple for any occasion. From the Gucci 2023 Resort show to Saint Laurent’s PFW 22, the bare shoulders and back, cut-outs on the waist, lower belly, and back have been on and off the runway. Celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Jessica Alba, and Dua Lipa have all been seen wearing different variations of cutout dresses. In Euphoria, Maddy’s show-stopping cut-out I.AM.GIA ensemble from the most recent season has been an iconic moment and has become extremely trendy.

Cut-outs have been spotted on the runways for years, all the way back to the 1990s and Tom Ford's iconic fall/winter 1995 show. Nearly two decades later, the cutout dresses made their way back onto the runways in 2017, when Gigi Hadid walked for Prabal Gurung SS18 wearing a gleaming red toros-baring cut out dress. That same year, her sister Bella Hadid wore a candy-striped dress featuring an exposed midriff at the Jason Wu SS18 show. Australian designer Christopher Esber’s forways into the world of cut-out dresses made waves on the internet after Zendaya wore his creations in 2019 and 2020. Esber’s cut-out pieces have boomed since and have even been seen on Dua Lipa. Similar extreme cut-outs — albeit even more daring in the amount of skin they bared — divided the internet in late 2021 when model Kendall Jenner posted a mirror selfie at a friend’s wedding. Now it is seen on every Pinterest board, every influencer’s instagram feed, and everyone’s summer wishlist.
