Coachella’s 2023 Minimalist Desert Vibes
It’s happening! Our yearly dose of festival desert fashion direct from El Indio, California has arrived.
Coachella, one of music's most famous festivals, is a breathing ground for one of fashion’s biggest summits. A fashion-slash-music-hybrid event that has established its own stylistic aesthetic. One reigned by floral crowns, shimmery makeup, cowboy boots, crochet sets, macramé embroidery and is synonymous with boho-chic style.
The highly anticipated event takes place throughout 2 weekends in April and brings together the best of music and, since a few years ago, brands have taken over the desert by setting up camp and inviting influencers and celebrities. Brand activations such as the Revolve fest invite fashion's most influential personas who are welcomed with 818 tequila drinks, Cane's chicken nuggets and are treated to VIP treatments.
Since TikTok took over our lives we’ve been living vicariously through someone else’s videos and Coachella isn’t the exception. My feed is filled with “grwm for day 1 Coachella”, “realistic morning at Coachella”, “come with me to the Neon Carnival at Coachella” videos that I feel like I actually am at Coachella.
Which also means we get to see hundreds of looks from music and fashion aficionados. Not only do we see the final looks but we get to see all the behind-the-scenes fun going on. Yes, that includes colorful makeup and Vanessa Hudgens inspired looks, but let’s remember that it is not about “who has the best Coachella fit?” but about which trends are being mixed into the Coachella archetype aesthetic.
Since last year, when Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, fashion’s biggest it-girls, decided to tone things down a bit and opted for denim and white tank tops we predicted a shift in desert festival vibes. On top of that, this year minimalism is the hottest trend so it’s no surprise that many have ditched the bedazzled cowboy hats and gone down the monochromatic, minimalistic and urban way. An aesthetic I would describe as indie-sleaze-meets-cargo -pants look.
Aimee Song set the tone with her The Attico green, parachute cargo pants and bejeweled mesh top from the Camila Coelho Collection.
By no way does this means the valley has retired its boho-chic, crochet love affair. Herbert twins, Renee and Elisha, who wore crochet vests and gloves paired with sheer maxi, low-rise skirts and satin bralettes. This is how you do Coachella-minimalistic-ballet-core.
Amongst the recurring trends were maxi skirts, low-rise pants, simple tank tops and satin. Emma Chamberlain who was styled by Jared Ellner wore a white monochromatic Star Wars inspired set; boxer briefs, long sleeved t-shirt and vest. Accessorized with a vintage Diesel gorp core crossbody sling bag.
Influencer Isaya Elais attended her first Coachella festival courtesy of H&M, so naturally she wore a head-to-toe H&M look. Black, low-rise cargo pants, string bikini top and a bejeweled chain bra. Emma Lagger, fellow influencer, also opted for the low-rise trend with Etochs embroidered boyfriend jeans, Magda Butrym chainmail top and white cropped top.
Latin America’s favorite style and social media guru, Dani Schultz, wore a more basic look proving minimalism is actually the way to go. Her Coperni boots are to die for no matter how uncomfortable they might be, not the smartest choice for a festival but you know what they say “antes muerta que sencilla”.
Coachella weekend 1 is coming to an end. An epic two days event where music 's biggest stars, Bad Bunny and BLACKPINK, headlined but more on performers fashion in our next article. Don’t miss out!
