Fashion’s Best Moments at the Venice Film Festival
The annual 10 day red carpet extravaganza has taken place as the 79th Venice Film Festival is celebrated. Each year La Biennale di Venezia organizes the event with the aim of raising awareness and promoting international cinema.
At an event dedicated to the celebration of its art, fashion couldn't be missing. Top A list actrices and actors showcase the best couture. Since its founding in 1932, the event has hosted some iconic fashion moments, even more memorable than the actual films.
Film is one of the many art forms in which the human experience is portrayed and the Venice Film Festival is one that has seen many of it unfold. From Italy’s fascist days, when the highest award was named after its dictator, to screening ally Nazi propaganda films (remember this was the time where Italy and Germany shared antisemitic beliefs) to showing films made by convicted rapists.
If you want to know more about the continuous support directors like Roman Polanski receive from the film industry I invite you to do some research and make your own educated opinion on how art should not be separated from the artist.
The festival has also witnessed some of fashion's most iconic moments. Just last year Zendaya made everyone’s heads turn and jaws drop when she walked the red carpet for the premiere of Dune wearing a “wet” leather Balmain gown with an impressive emerald necklace from Bulgari.
Among this year's most anticipated film premieres are Olivia Wilde’s dystopian thriller; Don’t Worry Darling, Blonde starring Ana de Armas and Timothee Chalamet in Bones and All.
Without a doubt one of the most, or if not the most, talked about look is Miss Florence Pugh’s purple two-piece Valentino ensemble. She uploaded a video of her walking carelessly with a drink in her hand which has now gone viral. She skipped the press conference for her film but stunned everyone on the red carpet. Wearing an ultra glamorous and voluminous Valentino haute couture black gown embroidered with silver sequins.
No stranger to taking fashion risks, Thessa Thompson delivered look after look. Starting things off by touching down at Venice wearing an all sheer Victoria Beckham dress with black pants and red gloves. Then the sci-if queen changed into an archival piece from Armani Prive. Remember last week's post on archival pieces? Thompson is styled by stylist duo Micahand Wayman who made her look even more fabulous in a red draped gown with hood. Thompson is a maximalist queen showing us how more is more. She even turned her necklace into a hair accessory. Loved it.
Rising actrice Sadie Sink swapped her 80s middle school look from Stranger Things for an ethereal baby blue Alexander McQueen tulle gown. She attended the premiere of her upcoming film; The Whale starring Brendan Fraser (I know you cried watching his standing ovation). She looked absolutely increíble with her red locks worn down and loose. Her minimalistic makeup, plus the red hair plus the couture gown of my dreams made Sadie look like a total red-carpet pro while keeping a youthful look.
I have to say I didn’t really know much about Jodie Turner Smith but after seeing her at the Venice Film Festival I am a fan. If someone is bringing fashion to Venice it's her, along her styling team. Arriving in an ombre suit from french luxury brand Casablanca in a sorbet hue. Changing into a Gucci pink lace slip-on dress matched with blue gloves and knee-high suede boots.
My absolute favorite was her red-carpet look where she wore a Christopher John Rogers gown with a crayon print from his 009 collection. Later, she changed to another showstopping black chiffon Gucci gown with red velvet hem.
Tilda is someone who captivates at every red carpet with her elegant, avant-garde and androgynous looks. She never blends into the background. This time she used fashion to communicate a deeper meaning. For the press conference on her movie The Eternal Daughter, she wore a blue Loewe button-up oversized shirt and dyed her hair bright yellow. A color scheme that nods to the two-tone flag of Ukraine. For the red carpet she kept her bright neon hair that was the perfect accesory for the Ackerman sequined lilac gown she wore.
Here are more looks of the event.
