Homme Plissé Issey Miyake Brings Down Fashion Week with an Avant Garde Streetwear Collection

Japanese brand Homme Plissé Issey Miyake had their Fall 2023 men's fashion show in Paris this morning. The brand’s founder, Issey Miyake was known for his avant garde and extravagant pleated designs from the 90s. His designs were lively artworks when they came down the runway and had several influences from Miyake’s home, Japan. The brand is known for their technologically advanced design choices and silhouettes that influence the fashion industry even today. Even after the founder's passing last year, the brand has continued with his vision of merging art, design and fashion together with their Fall 2023 collection.

In true Miyake fashion, this show featured the pleated designs and color that the brand has been known for. The show had little neutral colors and focused more on bright and/or pastel colors that are normally associated with the spring or summer with colors such as pink, red, and purple. In addition to color, some of the garments had geometric patterns on them adding to the importance of shape for this collection. The garments draped onto the models and flowed as they walked in an angelic like way. Some of the garments had more feminine or unisex cuts and silhouettes that anyone could wear. Additionally, they had oversized silhouettes to them, something that is bound to be a continuing trend in men's fashion this year.

In between looks, the audience was wowed with dance performance interludes with dancers in costumes by the brand showing how the garments flowed with their dance movements. The garments resemble the always popular streetwear trends in men's fashion but they were designed in the avant garde style that the brand has always been known and influential for. The styling of the garments is just as important as the garment themselves. The outfits were styled with lots of layers and colors on top of each other, a nod to streetwear trends. Some of the outfits had complementary colors so it did not feel too harsh on the eye and the colors worked together to make the outfit pop against the runway.

Homme Plissé Issey Miyake are true connoisseurs of mixing art with fashion design. They have an eye for avant garde fashion characteristics that set them apart from the fashion industry. Their Fall 2023 collection continues what they are best known for. It had their classic colorful pleats with drapey and oversized silhouettes.
