The brunch was held at none other than VP Kamala Harris’ residence, the poolside event gathered many important female figures to whom Harris addressed in a speech about how neglecting economic opportunities for women is a setback to everyone’s future.

Highlighting the importance of allowing women's empowerment and the importance of women’s equality and involvement in different industries. Harris’s speech was also about women’s impact on the economy. She said, “When you lift up the economic status of women, you lift up the economic status of families and communities, and all of society benefits.”

While Harris was talking to her female guests she was also speaking to women everywhere. Reading her speech is very moving, especially the part where she quoted her mother, “Kamala, you may be the first to do many things. Make sure you are not the last.’” This is such an impactful statement that Harris’ mother made, it shows the importance of carrying on legacies and making sure that we keep moving forward.

Later on in the brunch, the editor-in-chief of Glamour, Samantha Barry, made a speech and talked about the history of the publication and how they’ve been fighting for women’s rights and equality for so long, seeing the importance of lifting other women up and not seeing them as competition to tear down. They are known for empowering women throughout the publication’s entire existence, their slogan in the 1940s was ‘For the Girl With a Job’. It is truly inspiring how they were able to fight for women’s rights in the 40s and have not stopped since.

There were multiple women called to the podium to give first-hand experiences on the impact of no paid family leave. Some of the women stated that they were forced to choose between their family and their job, which is a hard decision since a job is needed to provide for a family. This injustice has been called out many times recently and Glamour is starting a project solely based on this, to bring awareness and try to make a change.
