Met Gala’s Gilded Glamour Looks 2022
Anna Wintour’s exclusive list of guests and plans for the Met Gala 2022 are finally here. This year’s theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. Lace, ruffles, gloves, crinolines, and corsets galore, everyone is walking down the red carpet with their “Gilded Glamour” and “White Tie” styles. Maximization is the goal for this year’s carpet because when there’s glamour involved, more is more. Here are some of the many looks we adored from the carpet:
Blake Lively
Yes, this dress is the same dress. There is no outfit change here. The genius, Donatella Versace, experimented with an architectural design by making the bow unravel to completely change the structure and color of the dress referencing famous NYC landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty. Lively also states that this bold dress performance counteracted her shyness and really showed us all up.
Kim Kardashian
Rumors, if you did not hear, were spreading way before the Met Gala that Kim would be wearing Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr.President” gown. The rumors were shot down by other sources due to the fact that it would need altering (which was also true because the dress did not originally fit Kim, she went on a no carb and sugar diet prior to wearing the dress). Kim of course showed up in the dress with the white fur shawl, also inspired by Monroe. Matching Monroe’s platinum blonde hair and elegance, Kim looked absolutely stunning and stole the show. The nearly nude-colored sheer dress with beautiful crystals sprinkled amongst the entire dress was so classic and one of the first “naked dresses” there ever was. The Jean-Louis custom piece was purchased by Marilyn Monroe for $1440 and is now worth millions. Kim contacted Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, who acquired the dress and stored it in a darkened vault with a specific temperature. Ripley’s made Kim try on a replica for sizing before trying on the actual one. It fit perfectly, but the second fitting did not go as planned, which then led to her diet plan as mentioned above. She wore the original dress only for the carpet due to its fragility and changed to the replica version to avoid damages. Kim made Met Gala fashion history, yet again.
Hamish Bowles
Bowles followed the “white tie” dress code to the T. The global editor-at-large is decked in Ralph Lauren and looks dapper. The clean and crisp white shirt and bow tie paired with his gilded crown and cane could not have gotten any better.
Sarah Jessica Parker
And just like that… SJP shows up in the most thoughtful, extraordinary gown. Despite the beauty of the dress, there was an inspiring backstory to it all. SJP pays homage to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley in her Christopher John Rogers dress. Keckley was the first black female fashion designer in the White House and was a former slave in Virginia and D.C. As one who values interpretation and deconstruction, SJP and Rogers created a dress that highlighted the “over-the-top proportions” of the Gilded Age, but also the inequality that was happening at the same time. SJP and Rogers incorporated a design that Keckley made in the 1860s, and that was a black and white gingham-plaid pattern. Embodying the Gilded Age styles even more, the dress takes shape with its crinoline bottom and corset top. To complete the already genius look, the veil was a beautiful touch to symbolize corruption and opulence in the Gilded Age.
Emily Ratajkowski
We cannot ignore this vintage Versace. The ensemble was originally worn by supermodel Yasmeen Ghauri from the spring/summer 1992 collection. Ratajkowski looks stunning in the skin-baring dress that drapes in beads, sequin, gold tulle, and stunning, colorful fabric. She lets the dress have its moment by putting her hair into an up-do and wearing simple, gold, strappy heels.
Gemma Chan
There are no words. The only word we can think of is “speechless”. It couldn’t get any more Gilded Glamour than this. With the sequined Louis Vuitton crinoline and leather frock, Chan looks beautiful.
Laura Harrier
Harrier leaned into the styles of the Gilded Age by exploring with a hand-stitched, custom corseted gown made by Victor Glemaud in collaboration with H&M. With a boned corset and full petticoat waist, this was a change for Harrier as she mentions she typically goes for a minimalistic look. The Josephine Baker-inspired look is absolutely stunning and definitely worth stepping out of her comfort zone.
Cole Sprouse
Sprouse could be spotted a mile away in his dazzling Versace chainmail top beneath his silver silk suit. The maximization of glamour is at its all time high when it comes to this suit. Have you ever seen such a glamorous suit in your life?
Megan Thee Stallion
Gold on gold on gold, Megan thee Stallion looks hot in this Moschino look. With the leg slit moment, the cutout, and the endless gold sequin, Megan killed it. Popular in the Gilded Age were peacock feathers as they exemplify the beauty of nature, so Megan incorporated this into her look by wearing a metallic feather shawl over her shoulders.
Kris Jenner
The one and only, Kris Jenner, and ultimate momager, wore a stunning Oscar de la Renta dress channeling Jackie Kennedy. The soft, but chic and elegant look was paired with silk white gloves to serve the opulent Gilded Glamour attire. Everything about Jenner’s look was so beautiful. You are doing great sweetie!
Tessa Thompson
Thompson wore a beautiful blush pink tulle gown by Carolina Herrera and designed by Wes Gordon, the brand’s creative director. The gown embodies the Gilded Age silhouette as the tulle is ruffled while trailing behind her. The boned corset is also made with tulle and wraps around her chest giving a delicate, feminine look.
Conan Gray
Gray looks dazzling in his silver sequin pants and an embellished white chiffon top and cape. Valentino hit the nail on the head when it comes to glamour. Paired with white platform heels, this look is not one to forget.
Bella Hadid
Hadid popped off with lace tights shown off through a leg slit, a cluster of pearls around her ankles, a leather bodice, and draping black gloves. The custom Burberry look is beyond unique and puts a twist on Gilded Glamour by adding a hint of edginess.
