On Wednesday We Wear Black

Fashion's cross over to the dark side continues to reign as black is this season's reigning color.

We transitioned from the popular Y2K mainstream trend into an all things Goth obsession. Black lace, black latex, black ruffles, black lips were all trending during Fashion Month. Versace, in full maximalist form, delivered the most stunning gothic bridal couture gowns, Prada, Givenchy, Burberry, Chloe all went darker.

Black is the most powerful color, in my opinion, as it signifies power, protection, elegance, respect and also plays with darker symbolisms like grief, mystery, rebellion or hiding. A color that can easily be associated with loneliness and to someone that wants to be left alone. While it might be true it also represents someone who is very strong-willed and determined.

The absence of light does not mean the absence of style and Wednesday Addams is here to solidify Gothic trend dominance.

Fall is the season to Goth-out and no better style inspiration than the looks created by Colleen Atwood for Netflix hit series Wednesday which now holds the record for most hours viewed series on Netflix with over 341.2 million hours in its first week!

Jenna Ortega in Versace slip dress, Dolce & Gabbana suit, Saint Laurent sheer lace gown and Valentino platform heels.

A modern take on the Addams Family, Wednesday is the absolute perfect teenage-drama that como I es spookiness with mystery and horror. Jenna Ortega delivers a jaw-dropping performance as we all obsess over her improvised iconic dance scene.

So let’s get into fashion details. Snap, snap

Colleen Atwood is a costume designer and has previously worked with director Tim Burton in productions like Alice in Wonderland, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Edward Scissorhands. So she definitely has that Tim Burton’s spooky look nailed down.

Wednesday’s style is a combination between Dark Academia, gothic aesthetic, babydoll silhouettes, and dark school girl. It’s about prioritizing black, not dark blue or dark plum, black.

Add in exaggerated collars, lace, white details, ruffles, pleated skirts and checkered prints. Oh! And you can’t forget the shoes, the higher the platform the better.

Wednesday by no means represents the stereotypical it-girl but it’s 2022 and there is nothing more it-girlish than someone who knows her own agency, recognizes her flaws and isn’t about pleasing everyone but herself.

Wednesdays all-black school uniform and Prada Monolith brushed leather lace-up shoes. For her more casual looks she goes for the Naked Wolfe slider back platform sneakers.

I think this is an all fan favorite, the black, ruffles vintage Alaia dress Wednesday wears to the Rave’N paired with black kitten heel Louibuitons.

When she isn’t dancing she is either writing her novel, fighting off a monster, dealing with a centuries old dead Pilgrim psychopath, investigating a morgue and dealing with a love triangle she opts for a more comfy look; checkered sweater vests.

So get ready for a real gothic season.
