Princess Diana’s Divorce Wardrobe Broke Royalty Boundaries But Shaped Fashion Forever

You’ve probably seen so much of this already, but we can’t help but take a look back into Princess Diana’s fashion after her divorce from Prince Charles in the ‘90s. She was revealing a new confidence post-divorce even though it may have gone against the rules of Royalty. Afterall, some of these looks have been reworked into today’s fashion and it is inevitable that there will always be a reference back to Princess Diana’s ensembles. We are here to remind you that her legacy lives on and so do her fashion statements that she effortlessly looked beautiful in.

The start of it all came with the revenge dress in 1994. On the night Prince Charles was admitting to his adultery on broadcast television in an interview, Princess Diana was off to a fundraising event at the Serpentine Gallery. The sexy LBD by Christina Stambolian was made for Princess Diana three years prior but was never worn because it was too daring. She accessorized with her signature sapphire choker. This was her moment.

Princess Diana did not stop there. She represented freedom and independence in a white Versace mini dress with a low scoop neck while visiting Moderno, Italy in September 1995.

Princess Diana wore a yellow-orange Versace suit with the Lady Dior bag and other black accents to Liverpool Women’s Hospital in 1995. She was really coming into her own at this time and it was evident in the way she dressed.

For a rugby match in Paris, Princess Diana demonstrated that turtlenecks remained in her wardrobe even though she went for more revealing ensembles post-divorce. This outfit in particular was a black silk turtleneck that she paired with a beige suit jacket.

Toning it down to casual wear, which wasn’t allowed while being considered Royalty unless walking the dog, Princess Diana leaves the gym in one of her many collegiate crewneck sweatshirts and bike shorts. She accessorized the look with a Gucci tote for a touch of luxury.

In 1996, Diana wore another Versace look. She sported a baggy white Versace knee-length coat worn as a dress while arriving to The Association Of American Correspondents lunch. She paired it with black tights and shoes.

The trench coats you see today dressed down with trendy, but timeless sportswear didn’t come from nowhere. Princess Diana was one of the few to lead this trend of mixing the elegance of the trench coat and ditching the heels for sneakers.

Princess Diana attended the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Dinner Dance at Sydney Entertainment Centre in Sydney, Australia on October 31, 1996. A lot of her dresses in this era were bold, solid colors with a flattering silhouette. This one being a blue one shoulder that went down to her ankles with matching blue shoes and a blue clutch.

Princess Diana put on yet another Versace look (probably her favorite brand), this time it was a bold purple monochrome ensemble with a choker in 1996 to a gala dinner at Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

Keeping to her love for low necklines, Princess Diana wore an embroidered Catherine Walker dress to the Aids Crisis Trust And The Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund in 1997.
