The Style Evolution of the Iconic Selena Gomez

The third most followed person on Instagram, a trendsetter and mental health advocate, Selena Gomez, is also a fashion icon. Since her Disney days, every young fan has obsessed ove her style, from infinity scarves to jaw-dropping gorgeous red carpet gowns.

As Selena has gotten older and phased out of her Disney era, she has really started to find herself and we’ve been invited to witness such changes. Through her documentary My Mind & Me we saw an intimate glance at the behind the scenes life of the Uber star. A pure and heartfelt inside look that at times wasn’t glamorous at all but an honest reality of who Selena is. If we loved her before now our love is completely solidified.

I have been following Selena Gomez since I was a kid, who else remembers watching Wizards of Waverly Place? With my favorite character, Alex Russo, played by Gomez. However, she started acting even before Disney and played a part in Barney & Friends, but was not in the public eye until Wizards of Waverly Place.

In this era, she was very young and her style was as some people would say “Disney-esque”. Very kid-friendly annd even mom-approved. I mean, who can forget her iconic blue hair extensions fro the Teen Vogue Party?

During the end of her time at Disney and around the time she started putting music out alongside her band The Scene, Gomez experimented with her style and womanhood. Leaving behind the Disney Princess, good girl aesthetic and moving froward into fashion.

However, once she left in 2012, she was free to dress however she liked, giving her so much freedom. She started wearing more form-fitting clothes to show off her figure. For the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party she played with a cream corset dress made of a tulle skirt and lots of ruffles.

In 2016 she started to get more bold with her looks and started wearing more glitter, shimmer, and more fitted dresses that accentuate her chest. Her dress for the 50th Grammy in 2016 was a deep purple glittery dress that was fitted to her body and had cutouts on her ribs. She matched it with a bold glamour makeup look and simple silver earrings.

For the 2018 Met Gala Gomez looked like an angel with a white flowy gown that correspond to the theme, Heavenly Bodies. Her bodice was beaded with all kinds of stones and jewels and the skirt was made of transparent layers that gave an angelic look. Her hair was curly, and a little messy, which gave a very natural and raw look that would make her really stand out to the crowd.

2019 Gomez attenuated the Dead Don’t Die premiere and she wore a black Celine dress to the red carpet. The dress was looser around her body with voluminous feathered sleeves that were the perfect amount of detail to make her stand out. Her makeup was more of a soft glam, which is something that she had become accustomed to throughout the years. In a video with Vogue, Selena said that she felt beautiful this night and this was one of the times where she was fluctuating with her weight, but her team helped her look and feel her best that night.

With the launch of her very famous and very sought out makeup brand, Rare Beauty, Selena has been in many of the campaigns. In these shoots, she seems to have more natural looks with either a pop of color in her lip shade. This makeup brand exploded the moment it went live and there are still products of theirs that are impossible to find because they are always sold out.

Now fast forwarding to this year, 2023, at the Golden Globe Awards. Selena was wearing a Valentino gown that made her look like such a true beauty in this world. The strapless black velvet number hugged her body in all the right spots and the deep purple sleeves, which took up quite a bit of room, flowed all the way to the ground creating a train. It now seems to be a theme with Selena that volume and puffiness are a part of her red carpet looks, which is rightfully so because she always looks amazing in it.
