Spring has Sprung: A Spring 2023 Shopping Guide

TWELVE WEEKS UNTIL SPRING. In January, this was the message pasted on a sign outside the greenhouse I live next door to, which I drive by whenever I leave the house. Every year, they count down the weeks, a beacon of hope in a bleakly cold New England, proof that warmer days are coming.

Since yesterday, the sign simply reads “Open”. Finally, at the end of March, spring has arrived, ushering an era of sunshine, crocuses blooming along the side of the road, snowdrops and daffodils pushing their way up through the soil. Spring announces a time of rebirth, March 20th a signpost for better days ahead.

You can feel it in the air; not just in the temperature, but in the atmosphere, in the tint of the sunshine and the green smell. My hands itchily reach for shorts that it's still too cold to wear, my eyes redirect themselves from the burgundies and browns to the pale pinks, baby blues, and chartreuse pieces in my closet.

The spring trends that we have anticipated for months are finally upon us, and it's time to break out the sheer layers, leather, and maxi skirts. Here are some of our favorite spring trends in fashion and beauty and where to shop them.

Leather

Listen. I am a strong believer that second hand leather is the only ethical leather there is. Thrift stores, Depop, and luxury resale apps are great resources to find beautiful leather pieces. But none of us are perfect, and moto inspired leather pieces were all over fashion season this year, so here are some examples in both faux and genuine leather for your viewing pleasure:

Maxi Skirts

It’s easy, comfortable, versatile. It can be warm and heavy or cool and light, dressed up or down, business chic or cool and grungy. The maxi skirt is making a big comeback.

Euro-ugly Sneakers

Okay, so these aren’t really new, but they are slowly creeping their way into the American consciousness. Their ‘ugly’ look makes them rather ubiquitous. They go with nothing, so therefore they go with everything, and they are comfortable.

Sheer Layers

Whether you want to be bold and wear them on their own or create a complex, layered look, sheer layers are everywhere right now. Light and breezy and perfect for spring, here are some of our favorites.

SPF

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that with the coming of warmer weather, we will be spending more time outside, and that means that we must protect our skin. After all, the best accessory is a healthy body. Here are some products with SPF to protect yourself in style.
