The Fashion Evolution of Harry Styles
Harry’s House is here. The much anticipated album from Harry Styles is out now, and much like his music, his style has evolved into something that is uniquely his own. From his days with One Direction to his first solo album to now his latest album, the star has developed his own style by bending the rules of fashion.
Harry Styles has come a long way from his boy band style days. Being in a band, Styles’ look was very mainstream and he didn’t color outside the lines with his style. Preppy cardigans and blazers, polo shirts, scarves, and matching suits with his fellow bandmates were all staples in the popstars closet when he began his career with One Direction. Like everyone else, I’m glad to see Styles’ fashion blossom into what it has become–Harry Styles is a fashion icon.
Outside of his boy band attire, Harry migrated towards rockstar styles with printed button ups, dark denim, and a heeled black buckled boot. Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs were designers Harry frequented. The half unbuttoned shirt look and skinny jeans was a favorite of Harry’s for sure. Eventually he started playing around with printed suits and started wearing some Gucci. Styles definitely played it pretty safe with his fashion early on in his career, but as his music style developed, so did his colorful fashion sense.
As Harry moved away from his boy band era, his signature look turned into a bold statement suit. And Harry Styles knows how to wear a suit, especially a Gucci suit. His style has evidence of seventies and psychedelic influences, and he loves a classic jumper look–almost a hipster granny look, but with his own Harry twist. Whatever Harry Styles wears, he always puts his own twist on it like a true fashion icon.
Harry Style knows how to dress for special events. Whether it’s performing at Coachella, attending the Grammys or hosting and attending the Met Gala, he is one of the best dressed where ever he goes.
Harry Styles has become one of the best dressed musicians ever. His style influences include musicians like Prince, Kurt Cobain, Marc Bolan, and Little Richard–a wide range of musical styles and eras. Styles’ fashion sense has become quite the pop culture phenomenon that there is a whole book on it. Terry Newman wrote Harry Styles and the Clothes He Wears that features over a hundred pictures of Harry Styles’ style and his fashion influences. If the fact that there’s a whole book on his style doesn’t prove that Harry isn’t a fashion icon, I don’t know what does.
Like many others, I have been a fan of Harry’s from the start, and seeing his incredible style transformation has been thrilling. There is much more to come from Harry Styles including his music and his fashion. He is rewriting the rules of fashion, and proving that you can dress however you want to and look good while doing it.
