The Good, the Provocateur, the Experimental and the Best of 2022

In honor of 2022 coming to its end I’ve selected some of my favorite fashion related moments. A selection of people, designers, runway shows and moments that gained icon status and others that made me look and appreciate fashion in a new way.

Before I present to you my selection of top fashion moments I just wanted to say that this year shouldn’t come to an end without all of us realizing everything that occurred beyond fashion. A year were all of us as a collective re-emerged to a new post-pandemic world that presided into a war, into civil unrest and the continuous violation on human rights including the latest ban placed on Iranian women and their right to education. So as a woman who got lucky enough to have an education and never went to sleep worrying it would be taken away from me I wanted to bring awareness on how we can help Iranian women. Because without education one has no power. No power to choose, to understand, to make a personal opinion, to decide, to decide our truth, to be as free as one can be, to protect our bodies and minds, to have a voice. I’ll be leaving some links for you to learn more about what is going on, as ignorance is a choice that piles upon the many reasons women are left to die.

Fashion in 2022 to me was all about further breaking the pre established gender mold, about bringing back experimental looks and about conversation. Any conversation really, from speaking out on controversies to analyzing consumer patterns and of course the ongoing discourse on sustainability which seems to just be that, a discourse. So yeah this year had a lot of heaviness to it and also a lot of beauty which we will be looking at now. Hope you like and enjoy my favorite fashion moments from this year.

Provocateur

Starting off in no particular order is Julia Fox who Times magazine named this year's Avant Garde muse. Fox catapulted to viral status really quick. And with that same quickness she won over the fashion industry as she came to open the discussion on what provocative fashion is. At a time where it felt everything was predictable she introduced us to a dialogue about how the body and its sexuality is not for the pleasure of others. It can be grotesque and unappealing even. Fox is a statement maker that encourages us to rethink the accepted social aesthetic.

América Gonzaléz

Definitely one of my favorite conversations was the one about the model who walked the most runway shows, 36 to be exact, during Fashion Month. Her name is América González and she is a Venezuelan native on-the-rise top model. An impressive accomplishment as well as bringing Latin American beauty into mainstream culture and couture runways.

Bella Hadid x Coperni

For my next choice I had to include Bella Hadid’s spray paint dress moment with Coperni. I now know this technology, Fabrican Ltd, has been around for quite some time but when I tell you I saw that video a thousand times and got blown away is the truth. The most talked about moment during Fashion Month and I am not surprised. It’s Bella Hadid, it’s performance art, it’s textile on a spray can, how could it not go down as an epic fashion moment. A purely technological exhibitional performance that delivered a perfect moment.

Surrealism

The big trends of the year included Y2K, parachute pants and the unthinkable return of low rise pants. But my favorite, even though it was more of an under the radar trend, was the emphasis on surrealism made by some artists including Renaissance queen herself, Beyoncé. For her 7th studio album artwork she worked with designers such as Harris Reed, Mugler, Christopher John Rogers, Melissa Asimon Hartman and her out of this world exoskeletal structure and of course Schiaparelli. A surrealist futuristic styling and visual delivery of what glamor and disco ball dreams are made of.

La Dolce Vita

Mike White took us to a Dolce Vita state of mind. The satirical masterpiece on gender roles and their power had everyone discussing theories and analyzing character behaviors, especially fashion choices. Italians proved that fashion is in their DNA as Lucia and Mia served with every glittery, short, stunning dress with my favorites being from local brand Clio Peppiatt. Definitely made their way into my wish list. Two characters that through fashion demonstrate the power their sexuality can play and how others interpret it.

Lighthouse Publishing

Conversation also comes in the form of visual stimulation and this year I learned the secret behind Vogue Portugal’s stunning artwork covers; Sofia Lucas and José Santana. Who founded Lighthouse Publishing who was joined by Vogue in 2017. Since then Vogue Portugal’s image has been renewed and we are so happy for it.

Anything Dilara

Dilara Fındıkoğlu’s uncomfortable ss23 runway show. I didn’t know about her or her work and my first introduction was a powerful one. It instantly became my favorite presentation of this year, a seductive, intense collection that didn’t shy away from transparencies and appealing to an edgier sensual fantasy.

Real Luxury

One of the ongoing conversations is about how luxury is being redefined. Brands like Gucci and Off-White changed the dynamic on how fashion couture houses should look like. Making us rethink what luxury really means. No better example than Clemens Telfar’s Shopping Bag. A vegan leather and logo encrusted tote bag that is not only slow luxury but a Black owned business.

SS23 Fashion Month

This year's SS23 Fashion Month highlights, enjoy.

Elizaveta Porodina

In July Vogue Italia released what can be argued as one of the most breathtaking covers ever starring Zendaya. Shot by photographer extraordinaire Elizaveta Porodina, who experiments with unorthodox editing delivering enigmatic images. A precious shoot composed of color saturation mixed with Zendaya captivating gaze and ethereal moves.

Sisters for the Win

Siam and Sarah Albinali won the Ready-to-Wear category at the Fashion Trust Arabia for their womenswear label Lurline. Sister for the win! Becoming part of the conversation surrounding visibility for designers and creatives in the Middle East and Africa.

Taylor Russell

Every single one of Taylor Russell´s red carpet looks. From couture Schiaparelli, to Alexander McQueen to opening the Loewe ss23 show. The Bones and All star works with celebrity stylist Ryan Hastings and we can only wait for more grandeur looks the upcoming year.

Inclusivity

Fashion that actually is inclusive made by Ester Manas and Balthazar Delepierre. During their ss23 collection they showed us what real inclusivity looks like, screwing the idea that clothes look better in slimmer bodies.
