The Hits and Misses of the Target Pride Collection
This week, Target dropped their infamous yearly pride collection, in time for Pride Month in June. The company has been releasing pride collection each year since 2015, the year that gay marriage was legalized in the U.S. (also the year that it became acceptable for corporations to embrace gay pride as a marketing tactic, since it no longer needs to be backed up with any real activism).
The collection, as always, is full of some interesting designs, to say the least. If camp is your thing, then you probably love to peruse Target’s website around this time of year. There are some items that are either camp to the point where they are genuinely awesome, or are just hilarious enough to be ironic, and there are still more that are just so ridiculous that it is difficult to understand how anyone thought they were a good idea. So, with no further ado, here are some of our favorite and least favorite items from the Target Pride Collection.
This is so funny. ‘Cause… fluid? Coffee? Get it?
This is not only terribly designed because it is illegible (why would you put white font on a light pink shirt? Why?), but also it is just incredibly cringeworthy. The font belongs on the wine glass of a suburban mom, and the color makes it look like a breast cancer awareness shirt. And don’t even get me started on the actual words. Live Laugh Lesbian? WHY!
All I want to know is why the eye is there. Really, I’m super confused.
It’s giving… Graphic design is my passion. Why would anyone put this on a shirt? How many people have ever really said this out loud? And why are there mountains in the color of the trans pride flag said against the sun from the Japanese flag?
I saw the front of this and actually really liked it. And then I saw the back. Who designed this, and what were they thinking? It truly makes me sad about thinking about how much textile waste there is going to be from this entire collection.
I don’t know if this is super pride themed, except for the colors, but it is adorable nonetheless. Please dress your child in this, and then send me a photo so I can fawn over it.
This is actually for your homophobic dog who is working on being more accepting.
Hands down the best thing from the entire collection. I mean, it’s a bird figurine dressed in drag. It’s absolutely perfect.
