When Collaborations Go Fabulously Well: Fendi and Tiffany & Co. Have Created A Capsule Collection
Fendi and Tiffany and Co. have announced a collaboration for the new year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the infamous baguette bag. The capsule collection includes two sizes (regular and nano) of the baguette bag in Tiffany’s popular robbin’s-egg blue shade that comes in leather and satin variations along with bag charms that come in Tiffany blue, brown and pink. The bags and the charms all have silver hardware that feature both the Fendi and Tiffany logos with the Tiffany and Co engraved pendant. Each bag has a silver label inside engraved “The Tiffany Baguette.”
The collection made it onto the runway for Fendi’s Resort 2023 collection in New York City during Fashion Week. For the collection, Fendi featured multiple collaborations with not only Tiffany and Co., but also Marc Jacobs (who designed 10 looks for the show), Sarah Jessica Parker and the Japanese brand Porter to create their own styles and variations of the Baguette for the show. The show had 54 looks that took a maximalist approach in their styling and designs. Fendi was able to combine multiple silhouettes for this collection, which featured parachute skirts, jumpsuits and slip dresses. Some looks featured the Tiffany robbin-egg blue color with other prominent colors such as neon green with white and gray making frequent appearances. Additionally, the fashion show looks relied heavily on accessories such as purses, hats, gloves, sunglasses, etc. At a press release, Kim Jones, Fendi’s Artistic Director of Womenswear, said, “It’s a celebration of a time, of the moment the Baguette became famous. I relate that time to a sense of freedom in excess and fun – both qualities the Baguette possesses.”
The baguette bag has become one of Fendi’s signature bags created by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997. At the time, she was just appointed as the Creative Director of Accessories of the brand. Karl Lagerfeld was the Creative Director of the brand and worked with Fendi on aspects of the bag. For instance, he created the infamous “FF” logo on the bag. The bag was created as a small, compact handbag for women to wear right under their shoulder in their armpit. The name derives from the bag resembling how French women would carry baguettes under their arms on the streets of France.
The bag was not an immediate hit. It did not gain popularity until Sarah Jessica Parkers’ character Carrie Bradshaw from the hit TV show Sex and the City wore the baguette and pushed the bag into popularity with her line; “It’s not a bag, it's a Baguette.” From there, the bag was turned into one of the first It bags for women. Even for the Sex and the City remake, And Just Like That, Bradshaw still sports the bag. Now 25 years later, the bag is still as popular as it was in the 90s and early 2000s and Fendi has created multiple variations of the signature bag in different colors to this day.
The fact that the baguette continues to be an It bag for women even today just shows how timeless the design is. Fendi created a bag that would always be in trend and can look good in any variation or color it's in. That makes for an always timeless and classic bag. This bag deserves all the praise and celebration after 25 iconic years. The Fendi and Tiffany and Co. capsule collection is arriving this week and is only available for 24 hours on both the Fendi and Tiffany and Co. websites.
