All About the Micro Mini Skirt
From prep school to punk to ‘60s style, the mini skirt has been around forever. After two spring seasons of re-emergence, it's clear that the micro trend has literally gained legs. From Dior, to Prada, to Miu Miu’s internet-breaking micro-mini, the classic workwear has been reworked to different fabrics, cuts, and styles.
On the runway, creative director of Bluemarine, Nicola Brognano, embraced the micro mini skirt trend with its latest collection, giving its early-2000s treatment with butterfly appliqués and rhinestones. At Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri's a-line styles provided a more polished take on the trend, a sentiment that was echoed at Max Mara. Meanwhile, Khaite's metallic and sequined minis are perfect for nights out while Etro is taking us back to where it all started with go-go inspired moments. To sum it up, all brands are getting in on the action and everyone is showing all the love—and feeling ready to show some skin. Stylist Elizabeth Sulcer states in an article with Harper's Bazaar "There's definitely an ease to it," she explains. The stylist, who is also well known for her '90s appreciation, continues, "[Minis are] a big, big trend right now and a huge influence in my work as well. It just feels very cool."
The mini skirt trend also plays a huge role within the influencer/social media world. With influencers such as Ruby Lyn and Hannah Schönberg styling the mini skirt with a more casual approach. Street style is full of inspiration and you can pair the micro min skirt with a matching cropped blazer, such as the Zara black cropped blazer, or pair a low waisted Brandy Melville skirt with a white tank and colored sneakers. There is no surprise that the micro mini skirt has been seen in almost every Spring 2022 trend, from Missoni to Versace to Prada.
One of fashion’s biggest breakthroughs is the Miu Miu’s take on the micro miniskirt. With an appearance on the spring 2022 runway, Miu Miu presented a sexy spin on a look associated with office jobs and school uniforms: khakis belted below the hip bone, cardigans and button-downs cropped above the bra line, and raw-edge suit jackets sliced to the rib cage. The miniskirt was the collection’s standout. With several colors and different versions of it, it almost looked as though someone had to use scissors and a more conservative pleated skirt. The inspiration behind the collection was to “highlight the redundancy of workwear in our closets at a time when the world had shut down.” (Vogue) This kind of dedication to the bit is classic Miuccia Prada. “When she did ugly-chic, it was really ugly-chic,” said Valerie Steele, the director and chief curator of the museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “She goes in hard for each of her looks.” (The Cut). Since the release of the look, the demand for miniskirts has hit a three-year high, according to Lyst. Depop’s “micro mini skirts” are up 23% compared to last year and the virtual styling platform, Stitch Fix, has seen an 194% increase in inquiries for mini skirts this year alone. In February of 2022, 900 daily searches for the set alone were made and now the fashion world is obsessed. From celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Paloma Elsesser, and Emily Ratajkowski, the set fits in nicely with the current Y2K renaissance trend that has everyone in a chokehold.
The mini micro skirt trend will continue from the spring season into the summer and we’ll see it evolve to different styles, colors, and materials. From mini skirt suit sets to dreamy, white skirts paired with a light-colored tube top, the possibilities are endless.
