Sex and the City Wardrobe Then and Now
For those who watched Sex and the City, and still do whether past episodes or the reboot, And Just Like That, you can’t help but look at the outfits each one of the 4 girls wore throughout the show. Carrie, Miranda, Sam, and Charlotte were style icons thanks to Patricia Field who styled the girls for all 6 seasons until the reboot. Molly Rogers has taken the baton for the new season after working with Field since the start of the show. Here is the breakdown of some of the most memorable ensembles from the show then and now…
The little white tutu that almost everyone has seen in the intro to the show. And guess what… It was only $5 at the time of 1998 when found in a showroom bin. It was so iconic that Field even made her own genius version of it retailing at $140 on her website that has a few other pieces that were recreated from the show. This look was considered Carrie Bradshaw’s very first outfit on the show with her pale pink ribbed tank top and strappy heels.
The infamous John Galliano newspaper dress. This dress was first worn by Angie Schmidt in Galliano’s Fall/Winter 2000 Dior runway show. Carrie wears this dress in season 3 episode 17 when she bumps into Natasha. She later wears this dress in the SATC movie as shown above.
The start of the “naked dress” revolution in the 1950s with Marilyn Monroe carried into the world of SATC. Carrie wears the naked dress on the bus advertisement to promote her column shown in the opening sequence of the show. The skimpy DKNY dress was then worn on her first date with the one and only, Mr.Big.
With her fur coat and dainty pearl necklace, Carrie makes this outfit look effortless and thrown together while running out of the house. Paired with python-print tall boots, this look is so chic.
Carrie is off to her date with Mr.Big in this beautiful floral dress with ruffles along the edges by Richard Tyler in 2001 for his resort collection. She wore the dress with a pair of clear mules and a pink purse.
You can never go wrong with a LBD (even though this one is more of a charcoal color). Carrie was meeting the girls for lunch to discuss her break-up and she is doing it in style.
Carrie’s visit to the Hamptons for the beach retreat was one for the books. She channeled her inner Wild West with a python-print bandeau top, a low-rise striped skirt, and the cowboy hat you cannot miss.
On the big wedding day, Carrie wore a Vivienne Westwood gown that had multiple gorgeous layers and a bodice top.
And Just Like That reboot has Carrie dressed up in a more sophisticated wardrobe. Wearing a white top that is buttoned off to the side with green cropped pants and her signature Manolo Blahnik Hangisi stilettos.
Does the purple Fendi baguette look familiar to you? In season 3, Carrie was wearing this same bag when she was getting robbed on the street. It is now being shown in the reboot to reminisce on past looks. Paired with a fun patterned dress and copper platform heels, Carrie looks fabulous.
While Kim Catrall’s character, Samantha Jones, is not in the reboot, we cannot forget about her iconic looks, this being one of them. Samantha Jones gives us a punk ensemble when she’s out on the town helping Carrie forget about her “post-it” break-up. The punk graphic halter top that ties up the front is paired with even punkier graphic pants. This look is absolutely amazing. Might have to call Ms. Field herself to send it over to us.
This elegant, plunging, shimmery dress looks stunning on Samantha. She topped it off with dazzling long earrings and a simple white purse.
The empowering hot pink pantsuit that is trending today was seen on Samantha. To no surprise, of course Samantha was one of the first to sport a vibrant, out-of-the-box working woman attire. She was powerful, fearless, and simply did not care. Her wardrobe showed it and further developed her character.
The Chanel scarf wrapped around Samantha’s head contrasted very nicely with her turquoise blouse baring her arms.
Remember when Samantha was trying to impress the fireman? She wore a little cheetah dress under a blue fur coat, and if this didn’t impress him, I don’t know what does.
Samantha is rocking an Ivana Sert swimsuit. The bejeweling and cutouts make the swimsuit look like a million bucks.
Charlotte York looks classy in the Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn inspired strapless pink dress. Paired with simple black heels, a white purse, square-rimmed sunglasses, and an up-do to show off the look, Charlotte looks so elegant.
Charlotte’s prim and proper style continues to give off a classy look in this black dress and pearls as she sips her martini. The black dress has a green outline along the top of the dress with thin straps.
A sleek, all-white dress that slightly flares on the bottom looks so simple yet chic with her big diva sunglasses.
Charlotte’s style remains the simple, proper woman she is in the reboot. Here she is pictured wearing a white and blue Balenciaga polka-dot skirt with a white puff-sleeved Stella McCartney blouse that puffs around the arms.
Charlotte is wearing a black ruffled dress with white trimming and very minimal accessories. Still simple, yet fun.
Miranda Hobbes was the ultimate girl boss. Her blazers and pencil skirts screamed, “I am in charge, do not even bother.”
Miranda’s style is a lot more laidback compared to the girls. As you can see, she is wearing a gray t-shirt with a blue cardigan beneath a brown suede jacket.
Miranda knows when to spice it up. She loves flowy garments with patterns, especially florals (not pictured), however this black and white sheath dress is so fitting and elegant.
In the reboot, Miranda is kept in her patterned clothing.
