Bora Aksu’s Moment of Silence for the Earthquake Victims in Syria and Turkey

On the early morning of February the 6th a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, leaving irreparable damages and taking the lives of over 40,000 people. A tragedy that placed many areas of the countries under an emergency state.

Videos shared with the world show the devastating catastrophe people are enduring to this day and will continue to for a long time. Buildings collapse in front of their eyes with many hearing the screams of their loved ones coming from underneath the rubbles. Today, ten days later, rescuers and volunteers are miraculously pulling people out alive, communities coming together as they lose everything except the help from each other.

Syria, a country in a very delicate state with more than 5 million refugees, 6 million people internally displaced and facing the repercussions of war and the violence perpetrated by extremist groups is adding to the suffering.  A country that already faced major food and aid shortages is in desperate need of our help.

We’ve seen before how fashion can be a source of relief. Campaigning to raise money and awareness, such as Fashion for Relief. This time Bora Aksu used his platform to raise awareness for the cause which is very personal as the London based designer is originally from Turkey.

Aksu has for the last 20 years established himself in the fashion industry with his creative vision that ignores trends, becoming the perfect outcast.

Collection presented at the Goodenough College where the designer told Vogue about the inspiration behind his rough hem finishes impaired by the paintings of Edvard Munch combined with a little gothic twist from Wednesday Addams.

Vogue reports on the designer's reflective mood and the minute of silence dedicated to the victims back in his home country. You can also head over to his instagram page where he shared the British Red Cross fund for Turkey and Syria earthquake relief.

Aksu FW23 reminds everyone at fashion week that while people are enjoying the beauty of fashion others are living a completely different reality.

A beautiful collection including his signature laces and crochets, cut-offs and romantic goth elegance.
