New York Fashion Week 2023 Trends

NYFW was last week and as always, there were plenty of wildly interesting streetwear looks, ranging from scant and sexy to cute Eastern European grandmother. We have compiled and examined some of the most popular trends spotted in New York.

Viral Moments

More than any other fashion week, attendees of New York Fashion Week tend to go for sensation. Perhaps that is just the nature of New York, a bustling city with the desire to be noticed, or perhaps it is the American desire to stand out (though by making this attempt, it seems more like they are just trying to fit in with their peers).

For example, attendees were spotted wearing MSCHF’s wildly viral Big Red Boots, or peacock feather glasses. Certainly, New York Fashion Week is not the only one to have these viral, bizarre moments- think Doja Cat’s Paris Fashion Week look- but somehow these seem less curated and more haphazard.

Celebrity

Celebrities, big and small: influences, actors, and beyond are elevated to a level of veneration at Fashion Week. Although this is true at any fashion week, it seems to be more so in New York; it is a meeting ground for the famous, seemingly more than it is actually a meeting ground for fashion. Celebrities hold an unprecedented amount of power over the fashion world, setting trends and influencing consumers much less affluent than themselves in what to buy.

Biker Leather

Leather jackets, especially biker jackets, were everywhere in New York last week. Oversized, fitted, vintage, black, brown, bright blue; you name it, it was there. As a personal advocate of the thrifted leather jacket, I loved this trend, especially the bright blue and white Yamaha jacket pictured below.

Animal Prints and Fur

Almost any animal print could be spotted on someone at New York Fashion Week. Cow, leopard, snake, cheetah: if you can think of it, it was there. These prints were often seen on fur or faux fur coats. Animal prints and fur are cropping up often at Fashion Weeks all over the world this year, both on the runway and in the street, and New York proves that the trend is catching on.

Cuteness

There were many outfits that can only be described as cute. Adorable prints, such as the strawberry one pictured below, abounded. This was matched with bright and happy colors ready to embrace warmer weather. On top of that, there were plenty of matching mother-daughter looks, adding to the overall endearing quality of these looks.

Classic NYC Cool

There were plenty of streetwear looks that truly embraced a particular New York City je ne sais quoi; a cool, tough exterior that still manages to look effortlessly stylish every time. These looks, without trying too hard, are the ones that define the word ‘streetwear’. They don’t ask for too much attention, yet they are fiercely individual.
