Copenhagen Fashion Week: Best Trends, Looks, and Moments to Remember

Running through the end of this week, Copenhagen Fashion Week has already provided memorable moments, interesting shows, and great streetwear. Although lesser known than the big fashion weeks, it has just as much to offer. It has been labeled as the most inclusive couture fashion week, as well as the most environmentally conscious. Also, the looks, both runway and streetwear, are fun, innovative, and downright cool.

Inclusivity is clear on the runways, where hijabi, pregnant, and plus sized models walk alike. In terms of sustainability Copenhagen Fashion Week has placed 18 requirements which brands must meet, at a minimum, to participate in the event. These include standards about what kinds of material is used, the labor products are made with, and impact on greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. Additionally, new requirements will be added onto each year. I don’t know about you, but trusting that an effort to be ethical is being made allows me to enjoy the fun, artistic element of fashion week even more.

One very memorable moment happened at the beginning of the week, when model Sarah Dahl stood up at the end of the (Di)vision show and walked away from her table. As she walked away so di the table’s tablecloth which was laden with empty glasses and other detritus. Turns out the tablecloth was actually part of the skirt!

Copenhagen, like any fashion week, has its own distinct style, impacted by the labels that present there and the local Scandinavian style. Here are some of our favorite trends from Copenhagen this week, seen on the runway, in streetstyle, or both.

Sexy Sheers

While it was a bit too cold for attendees of fashion week to wear these looks, almost every show in Copenhagen had at least one look with sheer elements. From no-pants looks, to layered outfits, simple and straightforward see through dresses, gauze, chiffon, and voile were everywhere.

Skandi Simple

The classic Scandinavian outfit, consisting of a warm coat, knit sweater, loose pants and warm accessories such as scarves and balaclavas. Neutral colors like gray, ivory and brown often accompanied pops or bright red and chartreuse. It's a classic functional combination.

Chunky, Funky and Cozy

Sweaters with funky patterns, shapes or cuts dominated the scene in Copenhagen this week. Knit skirts, fuzzy bags and shoes, and big coats also made an appearance. It is a Danish tradition to embrace the cold of winter by prioritizing coziness and warmth; these looks certainly do that, and have fun in the meanwhile.

Maximalism

As is the case everywhere, maximalism was big. Bold patterns and colors all paired together in lots of layers making a strong statement.

Orange

The color orange, which is a trending color this year, had a big presence this week. Soft pastels and bold brights alike added pops of color or made up entire outfits.
