Otherwise known as The Xixi festival, Chinese Valentine's Day celebrates the meeting of Zhinü and Niulang of Chinese mythology. Similar to Valentine's Western Valentine’s Day, The Xixi festival shares the traditions of exchanging gifts like flowers and chocolates, as well as going on dates with a significant other. The importance of love and beauty is displayed in the prints designed by Santu Song for the collection.

Santu Song, the artist behind the brilliant prints, wanted to embrace all that is love, art, and beauty. Her designs are vibrant and full of elements like flowers which she is known for in her illustration work, as well as hearts and various animals such as birds. This collection is a beautiful and colorful intersection of fashion and art.

The collection's three prints come in various flowy styles. Made of delicate materials including silks and charmeuse, the combination of prints and material makes for a delicate appearance. The print, primarily a shade of hot pink, with large hearts, birds, various flowers, and a Dolce and Gabbana trim, is seen in the form of a silky pajama-like set. The wide flowy arms are elbow-length and the relaxed fit makes for a droopy collar look. This same print is seen on dresses, hats, and sets as well, printed on various materials. The other two prints can be found on these same styles, as well as others including a leather tote bag, headbands, and sleeveless swing dresses.

This collection comes years after the 2018 and 2020 Xixi Festival campaigns by Dolce and Gabbana that were not well received by Chinese consumers. The brand was accused of encouraging negative stereotypes in its advertisements. While for some, D&G has a long way to go to change their opinion on the brand, A collection, in collaboration with a Chinese artist who is one with the culture rather than detached from it, is a step in the right direction in terms of marketing and brand image.

It’s fair to say that in collaboration with Santu Song, Dolce and Gabbana has been able to capture the essence of all things love and beauty with this stunning collection exclusively sold at their boutiques.
