Everything about the Y2K Trend and the Miu Miu Set That Is Blowing Up Your Feed

Y2K has come full circle and no, you are not getting deja vu, this is real. The trend is here to stay. (At least for a while, and we are loving it). Mostly every brand has been embodying the Y2K fashions on the runway this year. From mini skirts, to low rise jeans, rhinestones, lavender and Pepto-Bismol pink colors, liquid metal slinky tops, butterflies… You name it.

If you didn't know, Y2K is a trend that was born in the year 2000, hence Y as in “year” and 2k as in “2000”. From Paris Hilton’s many iconic looks including the low rise jeans and Juicy Couture velour outfits to Mariah Carey wearing her Emmanuel Ungaro butterfly top to “VH1's Divas 2000: A Tribute to Diana Ross”, to now, where many brands are taking this butterfly top and running with it. Y2K fashions are copied everywhere because brands know it will fly off the racks.

Blumarine’s denim butterfly top in their Spring 2022 collection was shown on the runway with matching butterfly-embroidered denim jeans paired with an elaborate butterfly leather belt. Everything about this outfit was spot on. They even added the square-rimmed blue tinted sunglasses that you would see some celebrities wear on the red carpet in the early 2000s. Dua Lipa sported this look, which further goes to show how Y2K has trickled back into the fashion world.

Wait, there’s more: Donatella Versace and Kim Jones showed their Y2K designs through their diamante, slinky set made by Fendi x Versace collaboration. To top it off, they touched up the look with a gold belly chain.

And of course, the Miu Miu set that absolutely everyone and their mom has been raving about. Miu Miu surprised us all with the return of the micro mini skirt. Its beautiful pleats, school-girl look give an effortless feminine touch that we all have missed.

Miu Miu is the sister label of Prada and was founded in 1993 by Miuccia Prada. Raf Simons has been working alongside Miuccia Prada as the co-creative director of Prada since April 2020 for the women's and men’s collections. Miuccia is known to shy away from collaborations as she tells Vogue that they sell more cliches, not so much ideas to the point where it turns her off. However, the shared responsibility of creative-design has only formed trendsetting fashions.

Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada collaborated their genius skills to create this iconic, nostalgic look of a cropped sweater with a micro mini skirt. Celebrities have already been wearing it everywhere. Hailey Bieber wears it in a Miu Miu campaign, Nicole Kidman wears it on the cover of Vanity Fair’s 28th Hollywood issue, and Paloma Elsesser wears it on the cover of i-D for The Out of Body issue.

A lot of our culture in the past has been focused on skinny white models. It was very rare to see plus-size models. To see Paloma on the cover of i-D for an outfit that is typically modeled on thinner bodies, it is refreshing to see the emphasis on curves and darker skin tones.

With the viral memes and tweets blowing up your feed, you can view the looks of the set on its personal Instagram if you haven’t had enough. Your resource to anything Miu Miu set related can be found on this account from memes, to magazine covers, it is all there for you.

The collection is up for grabs on Miu Miu’s website. If the pieces are snagged out from under your feet, alternatives to the Miu Miu mini skirt can also be bought from Versace, Miaou, and other designers' recent collections.
