History was Made Last Night at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards

A few hours ago the 65th Grammy Awards took place and sealed its fate as the ceremony that saw Beyoncé become the artist with most Grammys in history. It was also the night that saw Kim Petras, the first transgender woman to win an award,  Anitta who was nominated for Best New Artist representing Brazil and Lizzo’ s feel good positive speech. Bad Bunny opened the night and made everyone stand up and dance.

The Grammys celebrate the best of music, which I agree with those who say the awards are very repetitive and the winners are always the same people, and also the best fashion. This is one of the few ceremonies where artists can show up on their best dramatized, fashion forward versions. Unfortunately this time around the drama we love didn’t quite show up. It was a tad underwhelming as many artists chose to dial down and kept things simple. We’ve seen this recession effect in fashion since the beginning of the year so it wasn’t all that surprising.

Still, we got some good looks with Beyoncé and Doja Cat stealing the show in their surrealist ensembles.

We love a good Grammy whimsical moment so let’s start with the best looks of the night.

Beyoncé won 3 Grammys so wearing 3 different outfits seemed fitting. Arriving very fashionably late, she actually arrived an hour and a half after the ceremony started, in a Gucci metallic strapless gown with opera gloves, a long silver skirt with cascading ruffles. Changing into a custom Balmain off the shoulder, structural, surrealist, architectural gown with the most stunning golden bodice armor in which she commemorated her big win. Keeping things disco-ready until she changed into her last look of the night; an all black velour Schiaparelli gown giving Renaissance haute couture.

My personal favorite of the night, and of recently, was Doja Cat. If you’ve been following fashion week you know she has been at the center of it all with her out-of-the-box looks and makeup. This time she left the gimmicks aside and really brought her a-game fashion.

Starting off the night with a Versace latex gown. It was perfectly tailored, it was dramatic, it was grunge, it was high fashion, it was stunning, it was Versace! Honestly Versace just seems to do no wrong and Doja Cat just keeps killing it. Notice her outer space inspired lip gloss. Then she changed into my favorite look of the night, this time I am completely biased as she slipped into a KNWLS leather corset gown! The messy hairstyle, the nails and accessories just sealed the deal. It was perfection, bye.

Another big winner of the night taking home the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal album was Harry Styles. His album Harry’s House gave us many incredible fashion and visually aesthetic moments, just like he does every time he shows up at a red carpet. Whether you like it or not, Harry has created his fashion identity and it works. This is the first time in a long time we see Harry sans Alessandro Michelle as he wore a Swarovski crystal studded jumpsuit from Egonlab, we’ve talked about this brand before and so I got really excited when I saw this look. I feel like the popular opinion was that this look was a miss but I absolutely loved it and love the no-shirt theme we’ve been seeing lately.

Taylor Swift is definitely not a fashion girlie, meaning she never adapts to new trends or tries new looks. Which is not bad as she really just goes for what she likes and she’s been doing that since forever. Yes, she changes her style and aesthetic everything she releases which just makes me like her that much more. This time she showed up, yes you guessed it, yet again in a glittery Bejeweled, Midnight blue, two piece Roberto Cavalli gown.

Even though Y2K is so last season it was very much present last night, we can’t seem to escape denim-fever, think Britney and Justin, which to me seems a bit costume-y but Miguel proved me wrong in this all denim Diesel look.

Keeping the dramatic and whimsical feel alive was Cardi B in a freshly off the runway Garauv Gupta haute couture gown. The rapper wore one of the most beautiful gowns of the night, a structural cobalt blue surrealist dress.

Another hit was Anitta and even though she didn't win she surely looked stunning. The Brazilian singer wore a vintage 2003 Versace gown. I am telling you, Versace for the win. The strapless gown had an elaborate ruching train connected to a lace and leather corset.

She was one of the few attendees that wore black but did not fade away.

Staying on the opposite side of the popular black hue were Lizzo and Sam Smith.

Lizzo wore custom Dolce & Gabbana which is not. A great start. The over-the-top floral cape seemed a bit cheap and the striped corset was just plain ugly. A disappointment as Lizzo is one to serve looks.
