Jennifer Lawrence’s Big Comeback (Jen-aissance?)

Did the world forgot about Jennifer Lawrence? How Hollywood builds up young starlets only to let them fall

Before 2014, she was Hollywood’s darling, everywhere and everything. J.Law, as she is affectionately known, was a breath of fresh air, bringing a quirky honesty that Hollywood so sorely lacked. She was the epitome of the cool girl- until she wasn’t. Seemingly overnight, the world turned against the Hunger Games star. What was before endearing was now annoying, trying too hard, attention grabbing.

What happened to Lawrence is not a unique phenomenon. Hollywood has a habit of lifting up young starlets to success and acclaim and then tearing them down just as quickly, laughing and mocking them as they fall. The same thing has happened to Britney Spears, Courtney Love, Taylor Swift, and countless others. The downfall of these women has been made into a spectacle by the press, and many of us, not knowing any better, simply laughed along.

Fortunately, we are living in a post #MeToo world, and women reclaiming their identities is becoming more and more accepted. It is the era of the comeback, and Jennifer Lawrence is making hers (a Jenn-aissance, if you will).

Lawrence is attending the Cannes Film Festival in France to celebrate a documentary that she produced about the lives of women under Taliban rule. She also attended the premiere of the French thriller, Anatomy of A Fall. She showed up to the premiere in a stunning crimson red Dior haute couture gown and soft, sleek blonde hair that screamed of old Hollywood glamor. The red gown, with its ruffly bust, paired with a matching shawl and a shimmery diamond choker, was the epitome of elegance. And yet, she retained some of her classic Jennifer Lawrence-ness by wearing flip flops with her ball gown.

The 32 year old star also has a film that she stars in coming out this summer, a quirky coming-of-age romantic comedy called No Hard Feelings. In it, we will get to see some of Lawrence’s classic, quirky humor and hilarious awkwardness that make her on-screen presence so enthralling (and won her the Academy Award for best actress for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013).

It is incredibly refreshing to see the talented actress reclaiming her rightful role in Hollywood- we can just hope that we can stop ostracizing promising young women in the first place.
