La Nueva Casa Mexicana by Design House 2022

Just as Fashion Month comes to an end, October welcomes Design Month which in Mexico is celebrated with its very anticipated Design House exhibition.

Design House 2022, the space where functional design, interiorism and craftsmanship open up the dialogue for innovation and support for local design. Every year creative profesionales including galleries, artesanal workshops and designers share a common space where they present an innovative take on the year's theme.

This year “La Nueva Casa Mexicana” (The New Mexican Home) reimagines through the use of various technologies, lightning, textiles, sculptural landscaping, social introspective how Mexican design can have different approaches while marinating a common thread; Mexico’s essence.

The collective intervention allowed for a space to visually communicate different styles through the individual aesthetic each design house, artesanal workshop, design dealers and designers bring.

The concept of each room spoke to a specific vision that aims to narrate a story told through its curation. The use of certain materials like green onyx, burnt wood, pottery add to the meticulous detailing representing the best of Mexico’s signature interiorism.

Each room of the house was intervened by a collaboration of various design studios. The main dining room area designed by Book of Wa aimed to deconstruct the traditional dining room and through object story-telling create a space that could still be functional.

The tea room designed by Angulo Cero, AD HOC and Balmaceda was inspired by the late 60’s Mexican design where their shared love of color came through in the artesanal carpeting.

GG Arquitectura in collaboration with Porcelanosa took over the kitchen. Bringing together a neutral palette that invites guests to stay and feel comfortable.

Lighting plays a major role in any interior intervention as it defines the mood of the room, something Design Within Reach and Velazco Arquitecto know pretty well. They set to decorate one of the main bedrooms where the 60’s was once again the inspiration parting point combined with a heavy use of green onyx to keep that Mexican essence alive.

Every piece utilized in each room and space is created with objects locally manufactured helping use Mexican talent and provide a space to recognize its beauty.

Mexico's rich cultural heritage, history, biodiversity, landscapes and vibrant culture are mixed together to create minimalistic yet maximalist styles, making it one of the most beautiful and elegant contemporary styles to date.
