Lessons from Fashion’s Insiders
This past Monday night, BoF and Mailchimp hosted an event that gathered emerging designers, fashion entrepreneurs and creatives. The London based event saw fashions leading forces exchange experiences and reflect on the challenges faced in an ever evolving industry.
Simone Rocha, Bianca Saunders, Isamaya Ffrench, Sojo and Chet Lo were some of the guests discussing the evolving and demanding consumer expectations, sustainability, disruptions, supply chains and life as a creative during a recession. Imagine the conversations and knowledge shared in that room!
BOF, one of the hosts of the night, got to interview some of fashion's most talented players and here is what they had to say.
It seems that everyone agrees that when it comes down to it, the most important thing is to be true to yourself. It may sound cliche but I mean if Steven Stokey-Daley, Priya Ahluwalia, Rosh Mahtani and Charlotte Knowles have found that doing things that feel good, doing it yourself, being true to your vision and surrounding yourself with a team of people you trust then that must really be the key to personal success.
Rosh Mahtani, jewelry designer and founder of Alighieri, really said something that I think every creative person should really listen to, trust your gut. Even if you fail it is always better to listen to your instinct. Something a lot of us tend not to do for the fear of rejection or the typical “I am not good enough”.
Bianca Saunders, menswear designer, said it best: “focus on the design process and less on social media in the beginning.” In a world where everything is measured on likes and follows we forget that the real beauty and value lies within the products we create and consume.
This Fashion Month was the first real glance to what the new normal is after a pandemic hiatus. KNWLS founders Charlotte and Alexandre, shared how they are trying to step away from thinking too much and just work with things that get them excited. Bringing in a fresh new positive perspective for upcoming projects.
A night where positivity was exchanged and a much needed uplifting. Bringing together people bound by their professions but also by their shared experience, they might have different design styles but ultimately fashion is a universal experience that pushes the boundaries of language, nationality and gender.
