New Adaptive Collection by SKIMS - Launched for Disabled Shoppers
This week, Skims, Kim Kardashian’s “solution-oriented” brand of shapewear, loungewear and underwear, launched The Adaptive Collection for people with limited mobility. This collection includes four pieces that come in four different colors and sizes from XXS to 4X. These pieces have added hook and eye closures for added accessibility.
Founded in 2019 by Kim Kardashian and Jens Grede, Skims was initially marketed as a shapewear brand, but has expanded over the past three years into a full range of undergarments, as well as lounge wear and apparel. Notable for its wider ranges of sizes that range from XXS to XXXXXL, Skims shape wear also comes in 9 different shades to accommodate different skin tones. Skims has also launched with many other companies and in 2021, established a partnership with the UNited States Olympics Team in which athletes wore during the 2022 Summer Olympics, the Paralympics in Tokyo, and the 2022 Winter Olympics. The brand’s best-selling launches often boast waitlist sign-ups more than half a million names long. Grede says that Skims’ secret sauce is its continued focus on customer feedback.
One of the models, Stefanie Schaffer, lost both of her legs, sustained a spinal cord injury and paralysis, a traumatic brain injury, and suffered multiple broken bones in a 2018 boating explosion. She now has two prosthetic legs. Since the accident, Shaffer has found new activities to make the most of what has happened and to live her new best life. She recently signed a modeling contract which led her to her dream shoot with Skims. “From the moment that I was booked for the shoot, the entire Skims team was so professional, and so considerate, making sure they took all of our accessibility needs into consideration,” she adds. On set, “they made me feel beautiful and confident and worthy of being there.” The Fits Everybody Adaptive Collection is only the beginning, Jens Grede explains, co-founder and CEO of Skims, says—Skims plans to expand accessible apparel options across other Skims categories in the near future. “Both Kim and myself have been vocal about Skims’s mission to set a new standard in terms of innovation, quality, and inclusivity since launching the brand in 2019, and we embrace the high expectations our community holds us to,” (Fast Company.)
The Adaptive Collection is just the beginning and more solutions to more people are arising. “So this was saying to us that being disabled doesn’t mean you have to compromise. You don’t have to miss out on shopping at your favorite brands because [SKIMS] can see that [you’re] valued and taken into consideration.”
