Our Guide to Iconic Halloween Costumes
Halloween isn’t just another festivity, for many it is the holiday. It could be the fear factor, the mischief, the taunting and playing with the forbidden or the free pass to dress up and have fun that makes Halloween one of the most anticipated days of the year.
Spooky season has become a full on cult dedicated to all things ghouly, scary, forbidden that tap into the darkest parts of ourselves.
But when it comes down to the real deal nothing is more important than choosing the perfect Halloween costume.
Quoting one of cinema's most famous lines; “in girl world, Halloween is the one night a year a girl can dress up as a total slut and no other girl can say anything about it” let’s revisit some of pop culture’s greatest characters that have been immortalized as Halloween costume classics.
There is an array of endless inspiration from the scary genre to choose from. I mean we have Pamela Voorhees, Samara Morgan, Carrie White, Sydney Prescott, Ari Aster, Nancy and Rosemary to name a few. Definitely all great options but the ones that made our list aren’t necessarily scary but just plain iconic.
Obviously our favorite Kappa Kappa Tau sorority sisters made the list.
Scream Queens by Ryan Murphy quickly became a fan favorite as we followed the Chanels collegial ups and downs of dealing with a system-loathing dean, ugly sorority applicants, a 20 year old mystery and oh, yes! a masked dare-devil slasher.
The allure of the series lies in the social commentary and the insane quotable lines that come out of Chanel Oberlin mixed in with a kitschy absurd wardrobe. A very Moschino-esque, maximalist, pastel wardrobe that mocks the idea of how popular girls dress up.
Faux fur, pretty pastels, feathers, pearls, heels, earmuffs and anything tweed will make you the perfect Kappa Kappa Tau hopeful.
Aim to look like a candy, a very expensive one, with an absurd amount of feathers. Just remember, being a Chanel means being disgustingly nasty on the inside while looking absolutely fashionable on the outside.
I dare say Halloween doesn’t start until October 3rd, yes I went there and if you know anything about anything you will agree with me.
There is nothing more iconic or fetching than Mean Girls. Period. A timeless movie with iconic dialogue that after almost 20 years since its premiere is still as relevant as ever.
The limit in fact does not exist for Mean Girls Halloween costume inspiration.
Mary Jane Fort, costume designer, created the perfect glossed version of high school unrealistic fashion. You can choose from any of the Plastics mini skirts and cardigans, Regina George’s “A Little Bit Dramatic” baby tee, Cady’s ex-wife Halloween scary costume, Karen’s lingerie-mouse, duh! Damian’s oversized pink polo, Cady’s body hugging black latex mess of a dress or even Damian’s incognito lavender hoodie.
It is a scary season after all so we added a more gruesome choice. Our favorite boy-eating, flesh craving demon; Jennifer Check.
Although Cody Diablo’s dark comedy didn’t quite hit it off at the beginning it surely has gained its recognition over the years. As fans grow fond of the story including its now iconic wardrobe.
“The more bubbly and poppy we made her, the creepier she started becoming”
Without a doubt Katia Stano, the costume designer, changed the way we dressed when she decided to put Megan Fox in a tiny, pink child’s size, zip-up hoodie with red hearts and fits his espadrilles tied over skinny jeans. A fashion statement that is as memorable as any Audrey Hepburn classic moment. The hoodie represents everything that the demon represents, a metaphor for the way women's bodies are sexualizado, victimized and the Lolita vibes are also very present.
The final entree goes to Gen-Z’s favorite costume as it has been blowing up on Tik Tok since last year when Hailey Bieber wore it.
None other than Mia Thermopolis!
The iconic white, strapless, floral ball gown the future Princess of Genovia wore has become a fan favorite as it is easy to recreate and totally iconic.
Hailey epitomized the look and since then everyone has copied her, definitely a fun and totally cute option. You can find all the necessary elements including the headphones, gloves, tiara and sunglasses in Amazon, shut up!
