Prada and Miu Miu Bring Elvis Back to Life in New Film
The King is back on the silver screen, only this time, he’s being portrayed by Austin Butler. The film Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrman, made its highly anticipated premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Elvis Presley had his own rock and roll flair, and Butler brings that back to life with the help of Prada and Miu Miu. Elvis and Priscilla had iconic style that has left its mark on fashion even today. And you can’t have a film about Elvis and Priscilla without having epic fashion moments.
The costume designer is essential to capturing the style of Elvis’s era while also capturing the audience’s eyes. Luhrmann’s wife, Catherine Martin, was the costume designer behind the film. She told Harper’s Bazaar: “it was important for Baz and I that we remain true to this legacy by not merely imitating Ms. Presley’s actual clothes, but that we find a modern way of connecting audiences to her distinctive, history-making style.” Priscilla Presley’s style has undoubtedly become iconic. Martin collaborated with Miuccia Prada to design the clothing and fashion for the film. This was not the first time the Italian fashion designer has teamed up with Luhrmann and Martin. They worked on Romeo and Juliet (1996) and The Great Gatsby (2013), which won an Oscar for best costume design.
So how do you even go about creating a wardrobe for a film about some of music’s most well-known figures? Miuccia Prada of course studied both Elvis and Pricilla’s personal styles, but she also looked back at her own Miu Miu and Prada archives. Tweed dresses, suede jackets, a brocade pantsuit, and more are some examples of the creative and beautiful looks that can be seen in the film. There is even a reworked painterly check pattern from a 1996 Prada collection turned into an orange skirt suit. With a designer Miuccia Prada and costume designer Catherine Martin, Elvis is sure to have an iconic wardrobe.
There was even a sneak peak of the Prada collaboration at the Met Gala. Luhrmann, Martin, and cast members all wore Prada and Miu Miu styles inspired by the sixties and seventies. The reviews of the film have been raving–even Priscilla Presley spoke high praises of the film and of Butler’s portrayal of her late husband. Elvis and its cast and crew are sure to be future Oscar contenders.
