SELF 07 Saint Laurent Series
Underlying the complexity of various individuals, SELF 07 represents the freedom of self expression without censorship and conveys the many facets of Saint Laurent. Representing diversity, individuality, attitude, and self-confidence, Saint Laurent has unveiled the latest iteration of its SELF 07 art series, which celebrates the house’s personality through photographers, artists, and filmmakers. For SELF 07, Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello joined forces with six photographers to showcase the power of self-expression.
Harry Gruyaert of Paris
Alex Webb of New York
The icon of a self-expressed identity, Saint Laurent has been representing the “careless” attitude since the brand’s debut in 1957 by Yves himself. The image of a woman smoking in Le Smoking, a dark Parisian alley with only the streetlights shading both the sharp jawline and the sharply-cut tuxedo. It’s done the rounds all over the world, serving as a global reminder of the strong attitude the three letters of YSL stand for (10Magazine). An idea that pushes the brand’s image even further - SELF - an ongoing project that’s set to capture the expression of individuality through the work of photographers, artists, and filmarkers. The project was first presented in Paris in November 2018 and has been an artistic commentary on society since. SELF emphasizes the core and values of Saint Laurent.
Takashi Homma of Tokyo
Daesung Lee of Seoul
SELF 07 presents the world of Magnum Photos photographers Alex Webb of New York, Olivia Arthur of London, Harry Gruyaert of Paris, Magnum Photos guest photographers Takashi Homma of Tokyo, Daesung Lee of Seoul, and Birdhead of Shanghai. Published photographer Alex Webb turned his focus onto street photography and captured Los Angeles’ Pinata District, Flower District and Fashion District for the series. For Olivia Arhtur of London, her work revolves around the human relationship with bodies and identity. The photographers exhibit the totality of the physical world and its intersection with interaction. Harry Gruyaert, who is known for his work on color utilizes his fascination with airports to create a reflection on signage, light and the interplay that exists in this setting. Daesung Lee has always been inspired by the beauty of nature and for SELF 07, Lee presented the deeper connection with nature and its accompanying power of personal reflection that arose during the pandemic. Resting between the bustling cosmopolitan and fashion-forward atmosphere of Tokyo, Takashi Homma utilizes the camera obscura technique to showcase this reality for the series. Song Tao and Ji Weiyu of Birdhead, both analog-focused photographers, convey the harmonious relationships of species in nature. In line with this vision, their contribution to SELF incorporates negative photos for the first time to illustrate the dance of freedom.
Olivia Arthur of London
