Pretty in Pink with Barbiecore
We’re living in a Barbie world right now. My eight-year-old self is so excited for the new Barbie movie coming out next year, and it seems like the rest of the fashion world is getting excited too. The first stills from the Greta Gerwig directed Barbie film have been released, and I am ready to see some Barbie fashion come to life. Barbiecore is here, and the girly-sweet trend is being embraced by the fashion world.
Margot Robbie stars as Barbie in the film and is just perfect for the role. Along with Ryan Gosling as Ken, the two actors give the rest of us an inside look at Barbie’s dream world.
Barbie is known for her never ending closet of pink, and celebs today are seemingly borrowing inspiration from Barbie’s closet.
Probably my favorite look to come out of the Barbiecore trend is from Hailey Bieber. The model wore a satin corset mini dress that looks like it came straight out of Barbie’s dream house closet. The dress is from Versace’s fall 2022 collection and of course is embellished with the label’s signature Medusa motif on the straps.
Megan Fox is another celeb that’s stepped into the Barbie world. The actress has really come into the spotlight recently with her seductive styles, and lately she has been looking pretty in pink–sometimes even coordinating with Machine Gun Kelly. At the premiere of MGK’s new documentary Life in Pink, the couple embraced their inner Barbie and Ken for the red carpet. Megan wore a pink mini dress from designer Nensi Dojaka and MGK wore a spiky Y2K inspired top from Chet Lo.
Lizzo’s style is unmatched, and of course she took on Barbiecore.
Kim Kardashian’s pink Balenciaga look was a stark difference from her usual black and neutral toned looks as of late. The sparkly hourglass bag was just the cherry on top of the Barbie-inspired look. Thanks to North West for capturing Kim’s Barbie style.
Valentino’s FW22 collection was the first blast of pink we got this year. Their all hot pink collection in collaboration with Pantone rocked the fashion world, and we’ve been seeing it everywhere since it was first debuted.
While Barbie has been under fire before for creating unrealistic body image, there’s another element of feminism that she represents. She wears what she wants and shows girls that they can have it all. Mattel produces Barbies of all kinds now–doctors, zoologists, skateboarders, black, white, etc. Recently, they created a Laverne Cox tribute doll to celebrate the transgender actress and role model. There’s always room for improvement when it comes to diversity and inclusion, especially for Barbie. These dolls influence new generations of young people to pursue careers and to wear clothes that make them feel happy and confident.
The Barbiecore trend is for everyone. There’s no body type that it’s meant for–feeling pretty in pink isn’t just for tall, skinny blondes. No matter who you are, you can embrace the Barbiecore trend and feel beautiful and empowered. Women are reclaiming the Barbie stereotypes and turning them into a trendy and powerful way of dressing.
