Sheer Layers at New York Fashion Week
Sheer layers are the talk of the town. Recent fashion weeks have been demonstrating sheer pieces, from fully sheer dresses that put everything on display to far more subtle layers and details. We have compiled some of our favorite uses of sheer fabric at New York Fashion Week.
Alexander Wang demonstrated sexy slips, skirts and tube tops that left little to the imagination, including one look modeled by Julia Fox.
Christian Siriano played with patterns, draping, and blocks of fabric to create interesting pieces that incorporate sheer fabric in a wearable way. A patterned velvet and sheer top half is paired with a shiny, sequined skirt to create a busy, yet still classically beautiful dress. Very Old Hollywood glam.
Some of the best iterations of this trend came from Rodarte, who created a gothic fairytale landscape in their show. Black, vampiric looks accessorized with veils played with patterns and layers. A long patterned voile and velvet cloak with padded velvet shoulders, a floor length veil of a pretty, sheer, bejeweled number, and a gothic slip dress exploding with tulle were highlights. Rodarte juxtaposed these looks with brighter looks that were no less magical, like the fairies in the fairytale. A dress with an extremely loose knit plays with texture and how we define sheerness, and a glittery rainbow number full of movement was kept in the gothic realm by long, heavy black sleeves.
Prabal Gurung took a more colorful approach to sheer layers, incorporating lace into his warm toned collection.
Dion Lee also used pattern, incorporating loose knits and sheer elements to play with optics in his streetwear style pieces.
A majority of designers have incorporated sheer elements into their collections, and many of those have made it a predominant feature. It is a trend with infinite room to play and layer, and it can be as bold or modest asthe person wants. We can’t wait to see how this trend evolves.
