The Wardrobe and Makeup of The Idol

While HBO’s most recent internet sensation of a show, The Idol, has become pretty controversial and divisive, one thing that we can all agree on is that the costumes and glam are stunningly effective. The show stars Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp, the latter of whom plays a beautiful but troubled pop star struggling after the loss of her mother.

The makeup artist of The Idol is Kirsten Coleman, the same mastermind behind the viral makeup from Euphoria. Her most recent work certainly lives up to her previous magic. Coleman drew reference from Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears when coming up with glam for Jocelyn (Depp’s character). Her looks are dramatic, sexy, and the absolute epitome of what is now being called ‘indie sleaze’. This trend reflects the dark, smudged, messy makeup looks that were so popular in the 2010s.

The costume department has also taken the indie sleaze aesthetic to heart. Depp is commonly clad in scanty outfits complete with teeny bras, cutouts, and sheer clothing. Characters accessorize with sunglasses and cigarettes, which wholly create the sleazy Hollywood vibe. The looks worn by Jocelyn perfectly convey the importance of wardrobe, especially in shows like this. What she wears conveys her power and sexuality, but in some ways also emphasizes her youth and her place in society.
