Tokyo Fashion Week Highlights
There’s no city quite like Tokyo, with its high-tech and futuristic designs and styles. Tokyo Fashion Week was back in full swing and reflected the bright colors and lights and the high energy of Tokyo.
Japanese designer Tomo Koizumi is known for his ruffly designs, but this season, he centered his designs around the individuals that wore them on the runway. Instead of presenting his collection with models, Koizumi chose to have famous Japanese actors and musicians walk the red carpet runway in his uniquely made collection. The designer fully embraced his Japanese roots and has a vision of dressing Japanese celebrities for future red carpet events. This collection featured big beautiful ball gowns, and of course, his signature ruffles still made an appearance.
Kidill was finally ready to return to a full, large-scale fashion week, so the label went all out to present their latest collection. Edgy and rebellious is definitely how you would describe the styles of Kidill due to their punk influence. This season they hosted a concert to showcase their new punk inspired designs. The label dressed Psysalia Hito, a Japanese indie/punk band, in one of a kind bold designs.
Yoshio Kubo took a different approach to his collection by inflating his designs with air to give the looks a large, puffy feel. The collection blended technology and fashion while also showcasing influences of traditional Japanese kites.
Emerging talents and designers in the world of Japanese fashion also took the runway at Tokyo Fashion Week. Shun Ishizawa is based in Hokkaido, so presenting his collection in Tokyo allowed him to share his work with the masses. His 80s inspired collection features styles influenced by the yankii culture of Japan. Yankii were about non-conforming and doing what they wanted while rebelling against strict societal norms of Japan. Ishizawa represented this with darkly colored wide leg pants and lots of denim. The brand is all about meshing masculinity, toughness, imperfection, and elegance–a unique take on fashion.
While the runways were filled with impressive designs, the streets of Tokyo were filled with creative and amazing outfits. Layering and lots of textures were a big trend on Tokyo streets. Bold, flowing silhouettes also had a large presence in the streets during Tokyo Fashion Week. Others choose to go with a more modern tailored look during fashion week. Prints and patterns of all kinds were not shy, and showcased the fun, wild style that Tokyo has to offer.
Japan’s style is uniquely Japan, and to showcase it to the world through Tokyo Fashion Week allows lesser known Japanese designers to be introduced into the world of fashion. While typical fashion focuses on the three big cities: New York, London, and Paris, Tokyo deserves just as much praise and attention for its continuous innovation and masterfully crafted styles by incredibly talented designers.
