Victoria’s Secret Announces Re-Vamped Fashion Show in Their New World Tour

The Victoria’s Secret fashion show. An iconic cultural institution, until its indefinite cancelation in 2019.

Victoria’s Secret fashion show elevated the regular fashion show to an entertainment spectacular that the world looked forward to. The show was a performance, with supermodels and VS angels walking the runway in lingerie and angel wings of increasing complexity, as well as musical guests like Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.

It was also an event plagued with controversy, which is what led to its cancellation. Victoria’s Secret has increasingly been under fire for its size exclusivity and lack of diversity, as well as scandals surrounding CEO Lesie Wexler’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein, the infamous sex trafficker. With the show’s plummeting ratings in addition to all of this, it simply didn’t make sense to continue it.

Now, the brand is undergoing a rebranding transformation, and that includes the fashion show. On May 9th, the lingerie company announced that the Victoria’s Secret World Tour, their revamped version of the fashion show, this time in documentary film form, will be released this coming September.

The film will include a live showcase, and will follow the behind the scenes process of 20 international creatives as they create four collections, in addition to custom pieces created for Victoria’s Secret itself. It is also known that the event will feature musical performances and appearances from supermodels, so the essence of the fashion show will still be there. The brand has said that the World Tour aims to ‘unite fashion, film, art, and culture’.

Victoria’s Secret has struggled more than most brands to keep up with the demands of a changing, more inclusive world. It is finally changing its practices and making some effort to be more inclusive, launching a new maternity collection and body positivity initiatives. The drastic transformation of its claim to fame event is proof. This World Tour will place the brand’s transformation to the ultimate test, showing the world whether it can truly elevate women’s voices and individuality.
