Tears & Tearsheets by Katie Grand
It 's here! The ultimate tear sheet, wall-hanging poster book for all fashion conocieurs. To know fashion is to know Katie Grand, fashion's most influential stylist and founder of modern day most influential magazines. A once in a lifetime talent that literally invented and forged a new pathway for how fashion editorials and styling are done. She did what no one else was doing; experimenting with the odd, the beautiful, the boundary pushing and the imaginative.
Since the 90’s she has been creating one of fashion's most remarkable careers. At a time where being a stylist wasn’t a thing as she recalls her job title being “costume”. That didn’t stop her, I’d say it got her going even harder, as she went on to kickstart a new alternative to the already established status quo. Back when she founded Dazed & Confused magazine the only other publications were the giants like Vogue or Elle, yet her electrifying, exciting, fresh and experimental visual proposition proved to be a worthy opponent. Opening up a whole new dimension as to how fashion publications could be done.
Katie’s talent is unmeasurable as it goes way beyond knowing how to style a skirt or some boots, it's her sixth sense that incorporates art, design, body language, context, fashion, color, photography. Culminating in the images that transform and influence the world of fashion and therefore culture.
It all started with Dazed & Confused followed by Pop magazine, LOVE magazine and her latest editorial accomplishment; Perfect. A journey that by no means was easy but Katie being a fashion girl to the bones and extremely passionate led her to collaborate and work with the most recognized names in fashion and she also introduced new names to the game in an effort of maintaining things fresh, moving and new, Vogue take note.
Katie Grand is a force, period. I mean how often do publication houses like Condé Nast approach stylists and give them complete freedom to create a title of their own? Not often. The result in this case was the LOVE magazine, a sexy, fun, youthful, experimental editorial made for the fashionistas and culture appreciators.
Now releasing her book Tears and Tearsheets which looks back on her extensive career. A book that feels like a tearsheet fashion book for teenagers to hang on their walls is a celebration. A physical manifestation that demonstrates how she molded the fashion industry and why she keeps inspiring. Always aiming to create without limitations and prioritizing the vision above all, including budget or how difficult or crazy it could be. Compromising vision has pushed her to break limits, always playing with uncomfortability as her ally.
The very anticipated book release comes in a very aesthetic and somewhat understated design.
“That’s another thing I wanted the book to have, an energy and be a bit disposable, and feel like magazines felt to me when I was a kid in a way.”
The cover art shows supermodel and honestly fashion's most influential person at the moment; Bella Hadid. Shot by Harley Weir 5 years ago as an editorial referencing an old Norbert Schoerner shoot Kati did for the Face back in the early 2000’s. A nostalgic image that speaks to Katie’s past and present, highlighting her influence and strong presence.
Tears and Tearsheets, just like Katie, is a representation of how fashion and editorials can feel timeless and relevant even 20 years later. Which speaks to Katie’s superb ability to foresee what will come next.
