The Best Fashion Collaborations of 2023 So Far

A collaboration brews a different type of excitement in the fashion industry. Bringing together two admired entities to create something that brings out the best in both, but also, something completely different and never seen before. Lifestyle brand Supreme is known for its collaborations that introduce skateboarding to new spaces. Here are the three brands who take the crown for the best fashion collaborations of 2023, so far.

It’s impossible to miss Beyoncé in fashion this year. Her legendary 56-show world tour has a wardrobe to die for with custom pieces from brands like Mugler, Balmain, and LaQuan Smith. She has kept her accessories on point aswell with Tiffany & Co jewelry featured in many of her looks. Even her earpieces are customized with 4.5 carats of Tiffany & Co. diamonds. To share her love for the brand with her fans, Beyonce and Tiffany & Co. collaborated on the Return to Tiffany x Beyoncé Collection on July 29th. This unique, offered in two sizes featured Tiffany’s signature sterling silver circular charm engraved with “Welcome to Renaissance Beyoncé 925” on one side and “Tiffany & Co New York 925” on the other with a horse. This unique piece for the brand serves as a memento of her tour, not as a little trinket or knickknack, but as a fine piece of jewelry. Additionally, this collection is focused on doing good as 100% of the profits will be donated to the About Love Scholarship, which is a part of Queen B’s husband, Jay Z’s nonprofit, the Shawn Carter Foundation.

Free-spirited and bold, Louis Vuitton took a break from tradition with a collaboration with Avant-Garde artist Yayoi Kusama. Kusama is a Japanese artist, known for her iconic red bob and unmistakable art style. Louis Vuitton's brown monogram is a solid part of the brand’s identity. Mixed with the bold primaries of Yayoi Kusama’s art, something new and exciting was born this March.

Elements including unique painted faces, flowers, and dots take over the surface of classic Louis Vuitton silhouettes, such as their Monogram speedy. As part of the collection, this signature LV monogram piece came adorned in red, yellow, green, blue, and white dots.

This collaboration’s products and the pop-up shops that came along with it were nothing short of extraordinary. At the Louis Vuitton Paris boutique on the Champs Elysees, three-dimensional paint-like dots covered the surface of the building in bold primary colors aswell as white. A large inflated version of Kusama cascaded from over the roof, holding a paintbrush, and appearing to be the one to paint the dots. Louis Vuitton spared no expense to make this an exceptional collaboration.

Another collaboration to capture the hearts and attention of many was one by Mugler and H&M, two vastly different fashion brands, coming together to create something that is a little bit of both. Launched in May, the Mugler x H&M featured some of Mugler's signature styles, like their spiral panel legging and jeans, in a revised version that could be afforded by the wallets of H&M’s typical shoppers. Where Mugler’s typical panel legging often retailed for $350, many of their products for H&M range in the $100s, leading to a speedy sell-out. Casey Cadwallader, Creative Director for Mugler described what making this collection meant to him. He stated that it felt like celebrating Mugler’s well-loved styles. A collaboration and brands this different bring a product range many admire from a distance to their hands.

Vastly different, these three collaborations brought something new to fashion this year. Sometimes the best news is the connection of existing ideals you never would have imagined would mesh together. But fashion has a way of bringing exciting things out of unexpected unions.
