The Scoop on Heidi Bivens, The Brains Behind Euphoria’s Wardobe
We cannot forget the hype behind Maddy’s purple two piece set from the brand I Am Gia. Everyone went crazy for it and every girl on Instagram is now buying a two piece set in a solid color. Euphoria has influenced people all over the world in making their fashion decisions.
Heidi Bivens was the brains behind the clothes put on the cast of Euphoria. Bivens studied film in college and started her career as a journalist. Then she moved to being a stylist for W Magazine and Paper. Working with Euphoria as the costume designer, she is able to put both film and fashion to work allowing her to play with different aspects of her creative side.
Bivens carefully identifies each character’s profile to dress them to their personality. She knows these are high schoolers and can’t necessarily put them in all designer head to toe. However, Lexi holds a Miu Miu bag this season. Typically a high schooler wouldn’t wear that to class, but Bivens said if something looks good she will do it anyway. Viewers didn’t seem to notice.
She mentions how she utilizes mood boards sometimes but typically finds her ideas randomly. She very much relies on what she sees in the stores and what she sees people wearing on the streets to get inspiration. If she sees an image on social media she will also save it for reference later, especially when she goes deep in her rabbithole of Instagram finding small companies to purchase clothes from.
Cassie in earlier episodes was still discovering her style, so Bivens dressed her in feminine, Instagram-inspired, mall culture outfits to embody the self-discovery stage she was going through at one point. Cassie’s go-to colors are usually pink and blue trying to bounce off what her idea of femininity is as she is still trying to figure out how to present herself. To incorporate the high-low mix Bivens refers to, Cassie wears a pair of Prada heels from The Real Real because Cassie is the kind of girl that can pull it off.
Maddy, on the other hand, shows off her baddie outfits from day one wearing many pieces with cutouts, Y2K style, fur trimmed sweaters, low-rise pants, and of course her widely known two piece sets. Maddy’s iconic New Year’s Eve outfit is made by Aiden Euan from his line Akna with Amina Muaddi Heels. The cutouts serve to Maddy’s bad girl aura while providing an all-black sleek look.
Rue dresses in whatever she wants and doesn’t think too much about it. Her clothes are thrifted and very plain-looking. Her hero color is burgundy, which is the color of her father’s sweatshirt. It is significant to her, but she doesn't wear this sweatshirt everywhere otherwise she would lose her mind. She sticks to a simple wardrobe overall. Bivens dressed Rue in a Jean Paul Gaultier vest and Roberto Cavalli low rise jeans for the New Year’s Eve episode. This was definitely one of the more elaborate outfits of Rue.
Jules has an eclectic wardrobe with neons and many crazy patterns. She never strays away from her own style and remains the bold, playful individual she is. Jules loves to layer her outfits with not only clothing, but unique accessories to add more to her look. For one of her outfits she wore a sheer ribbon as a choker and added a star bead to it for her own touch. Bivens dresses Jules in a lot of NIHL, Orseund, and Maroske Peech designs.
Kat goes from innocent girl to BDSM over the course of just a few episodes wearing clothes similar to the style of Hot Topic. She has her own individualistic style different from the other girls and sticks to it. While she did have trouble figuring out who she is, she develops a stronger sense of self and it is evident through her fashion.
Lexi has been the most conservative of the girls with her intellectual and feminine look. Bivens dresses her in a lot of Miu Miu as well. With her sophistication, Bivens puts Lexi in colorful outfits throughout season two to stray away from the idea of Lexi being a wallflower when she is a significant character in the show. Her second day back at school in season two, Lexi is put into a bright pink and red argyle sweater to further develop her character.
As for the guys, Bivens dresses them in designer tops and tries to avoid skinny jeans at all costs. Nate’s dad, Cal, in the show wants to wear cool outfits while not giving off dad vibes. Bivens dresses him in a Margiela shirt as Cal’s character does play a wealthy role. Nate himself is often seen wearing denim jeans and casual tops to fit his jock personality.
We can thank Bivens for being unapologetically glamorous while paying attention to everything but the expectations of high school reality.
