Under the Sea at GCDS & Blumarine
“Wirdo”, GCDS outer space pink alien mascot invited guests to an underwater themed runway show. GCDS debuted its newly sophisticated SS23 collection. Set at the historic Rotonda Della Besana, turned into an Alien Disco club with a disco ball and everything.
GCDS introduced Wirdo as a character that invites everyone to be themselves and have fun. He explains that when looking at aliens or things that aren’t familiar one shouldn’t judge or have preconceptions. So Calza turned to iconic cartoon character, SpongeBos SquarePants, an emblem of weirdness.
“Plus this character is not gay nor straight, it has no boundaries.”
SpongeBob got a couture treatment; one GCDS hoped to introduce a more sophisticated and precious collection, moving forward from its classic logo t-shirts. A yellow crochet jumpsuit opened the runway with not one but two SponeBob’s embroidered.
As its name says it, God Can’t Destroy Streetwear, its staple streetwear aesthetic was included but like SpongeBob went under the couture treatment. The cartoon's signature colors from lilac, watermelon pink, neon green, canary yellow really made this collection feel breezy like summer.
Body-hugging mermaid dresses, lots of denim, crochet, cut-outs, unitards and a lot of skin baring were adorned with rhinestone crystals, flower appliqués and fringes. Patrick Star made an appearance as he was embroiled into a sheer micro mini dress. The collection was fun and sexy splashed with GCDS signature irony.
The accessories were top notch, the Wirdo keychain, the half crescent moon bags and distressed denim mini-bags keep up with the 90’s nostalgia mood.
From SpongeBob’s underwater couture world to Blumarine’s aquamarine blue light runway. This time The Little Mermaid was the inspiration behind Brognano’s evolving aesthetic; exploring a darker, sexier and much dirtier version.
Since 2019 Nicola Brognano has resurrected the beloved Italian brand as Y2K garnered popularity. With their signature studded belts, frameless mini sunglasses, faux fur and low rise jeans.
The brand every “it” girl form the 2000’s wore is making its comeback once again, only this time as a femme mermaid with sexy undertones.
Brognano gave us endless denim designs which opened wide at the hems or ended in ruffles along sexy jersey numbers that countered every curve. Blumarine is evolving but Y2K isn't dead just yet and we saw it in its hybrid cargo skirts, shell shaped bras and midriff baring tops.
Blumarine’s gothic marine creature wore next season's viral top, a denim crystal studded cross.
In the words of Y2K princess That’s Hot.
