Spring 2024 Fashion Week’s Gothic Presence

These past few fashion weeks have been full of surprises like Ralph Laurens's return after a 4-year hiatus and the shift from silver to gold chrome for the coming season. But one style to be present throughout fashion week in various ways is gothic.  To my surprise, these elements were frequent by multiple brands in London and Milan. This means alot of black for the Spring 2024 collection aswell as deep hues and intense detailing and accessories.

Chopova Lowena

London brand Chopova Lowena debuted its Spring/Summer 2024 collection “Girl’s Tear, Girls Tear” on September 15th. This collection takes a lot of inspiration from skateparks in this collection which is the definition of streetwear with a twist. Many all-black looks in the collection carry the dark and dramatic look of gothic fashion.

One look, in particular, featured a black bust dress with eyelet buckle straps and a lace-back skirt. The dress is paired with a silver chunky chain with statement charms. On the model's shoulder hangs a black hobo bag with an oversized silver buckle on the strap. Fishnet gloves and ruffly black socks tie the look together into a truly gothic look. Other looks in the collection feature silver chain belts and accessories and dramatic corseting with silver eyelets and black lacing, the gothic inspiration is unmistakable.

Marco Rambaldi

In a runway show presenting the brand's new collection “Malafemmina” for the Spring 2024 season, Marco Rambaldi’s gothic influence is eminent. Known for their use of pristine materials and skilled handwork that bring their designs to life, the beauty of the collection truly shines in the little details.

One look from the collection, a black look, featured a patent bustier top, laced and trimmed with black lacing, forming a heart over the bust. The look was styled with a low rise and relaxed black maxi skirt. Full-length black lace gloves featuring black roses and a gothic black and silver cross necklace tied the dramatic look together into a look both dark and elegant simultaneously.

KNWLS

Although less strikingly gothic as compared to Marco Rambaldi and Chapova Lowena, gothic inspiration can be seen in KNWLS’ Spring 2024 collection presented in London on September 17th. The brand is known for its bold statement and for tapping into futurism in its design, and this can be seen in the latest collection.

Overall, the collection follows a variety of diverse color palettes, but all black is common. One look featured a highly structured black corset dress made up of distressed black leather. The bustier top and straps both feature eyelet lacing, The dress overlays a nude sheer fitted top. Accessorizing the look is a coordinating distressed leather bag featuring braided straps and silver hardware. The model wears one extremely long earring, a silver beaded piece that stands out against her side-swept hair. The details of this piece emphasize the gothic inspiration in a dramatic, dark, and highly feminine look.

In a season known for bright hues, flowers, and flowy light looks, can we anticipate the stark opposite to be just as prominent? These brands and others seem to be experimenting with both extremes, making for an exciting season of fashion on the horizon.
