Tone Shift: Trends from the Fall SS23 Menswear Collections

The tone shift in this season’s menswear shows ushered a return to a tailored and traditional elegance. While Saint Laurent established an uncompromising symbiotic relationship between the mens and womens collection, Kim Jones doubled down on his romantic and couture-like vision with expressive cutting and luscious fabrics. Prada and Raf Simons presented collections rooted deep in traditional silhouettes while Loewe presented an essential wardrobe made of silks, leathers, and metal. The past few years represented a departure from tradition, but 2023 designers are eager to rework the classics and are applying fashion experimentations with aesthetics. Here are some of the trends from the 2023 menswear shows that are setting the tone for the year ahead.

The Going Out Top

The basic tees and button-downs are out, and sheer and leather tops are in. Taking the going out top to a whole new level, designers such as Saint Laurent and Rick Owens are redefining what a club top should be, whether it's a plain sheer top or a leather and cropped piece.

The Staple Jacket

The double breasted and waist defining jacket is everything we are seeing on the runway season. From Sacai, to Zegna, and other designers, the classic jacket is being taken on different variations, with patterns, stitching, cuts, and lengths. Materials such as denim, corduroy, and satin are replacing the normal and plain jacket.

The Power Puff

A seasonal staple, a puffer coat is a piece that is in every closet, but the traditional cuts are being left behind and bold colors and tailored shapes are presented on this season’s runways. Designers Rain and Armani are making statements with futuristic puffers and colors.

The Long Skirt

Midi or maxi, skirts are an essential to everyone's wardrobe, and are now making an appearance in menswear. By themselves or over pants and jeans, these silhouettes go a long way in being styled. The play on materials and patterns is what makes the shape unique, specifically in bringing a touch of felinity to the menswear collections.

The New Athleisure

Streetwear and athleisure clothes have always been such an important part, but reinventing leisure wear with materials, cuts, and styles have been the rage on the runway. From long sweaters to skinny sweatpants, Prada and Givenchy have been perfecting loungewear styles.
